Spence Earns Bars Title at Big Ten Championships

The Nebraska women’s gymnastics team took ninth place at the Big Ten Championships on Saturday, March 22 in Ann Arbor, Mich., with a score of 196.175.

Emma Spence grabbed the bars title in all sessions, tying her career-high 9.975. This was the first bars title for the Huskers since 2015 and the highest bars score in the Big Ten Championships since 2001. Her season-high all-around score of 39.575 was the highest since Emily Wong in 2013.

Spence and Sophia McClelland were both named to the Big Ten Conference Championship teams. Spence was first in bars (9.975) and fourth in all-around (39.575). McClelland tied for third on beam (9.950) and tied for tenth on floor (9.900).

Emma Spence took first in the all-around for the session with a season-high 39.575. Spence also tied her career high on bars with a 9.975. Sophia McClelland tied her career high on beam with a 9.950.

UCLA placed first in conference (198.450), Michigan State placed second (198.150), Minnesota was third (197.425), Michigan was fourth (197.325), Iowa was fifth (196.775), Illinois was sixth (196.500), Ohio State was seventh (196.250), Rutgers was eighth (196.225), Nebraska was ninth (196.175), Washington was 10th (196.125) Penn State was 11th (196.050) and Maryland was 12th (195.700).

Rotation One
The Huskers opened the night on vault, notching a 48.725. Spence led the way with a 9.825, followed by Ayzhia Hall with a 9.750. McClelland and Katie Kuenemann both notched a 9.725. Isabel Sikon (9.700) and Jencks (9.525) rounded out the lineup.

Rotation Two
NU moved to bars, where it scored a 48.850. Spence led the way by tying her career high and scoring a season-high 9.975. This 9.975 was tied for second place all-time in Nebraska’s individual records. Emma Simpton and Whitney Jencks both earned a 9.800, and Olivia Burns scored a career-high 9.750. McClelland (9.525) and Emalee Frost (9.450) finished the rotation. 

Rotation Three
Nebraska continued the day with a season-high 49.450 on beam, which tied for the sixth-highest in program history. McClelland led the way, tying a career-high 9.950 which is tied for the third-highest in NU’s history. Spence (9.900), Simpton (9.875) and Ayzhia Hall (9.875) followed for the Big Red. Jencks scored a season-high 9.850 and Sikon put together a 9.825 to finish out the lineup.

Rotation Four
The Big Red concluded the session on floor, earning a 49.150. McClelland (9.900) and Spence (9.875) led the way, followed by Jencks (9.800), Reese Baechle (9.800) and Lauren Homecillo (9.775). Allie Gard finished the competition with a 9.750.

The Huskers will await their fate for the 2025 NCAA Championships, with the Selection Show airing Monday, March 24 at 11 a.m. (CT) here. The regional round will take place from April 2-6 at one of four locations around the country. The championship round is April 17-19 in Fort Worth, Texas.
