Huskers Roll Past Boilermakers

Behind four singles victories, the No. 39 Nebraska men’s tennis team claimed its fourth Big Ten win on Friday night, defeating No. 52 Purdue, 4-1. Despite dropping the doubles point, the Huskers improved to 11-6 (4-3 Big Ten) on the season with straight-set dominance from Nikolay Sysoev, Lars Johann, Calvin Mueller and Colson Wells.

The conference dual action started with doubles at the Dillon Tennis Center. On Court One, Purdue’s Krivokapic/David Velasquez took down Mueller and Sysoev, 6-4. At No. 2 doubles, Anton Shepp and Henry Bilicic bested Simeunovic/Labrador, 7-5, to even the matches. For the doubles point, Leo Linquet and Johann battled back from a deficit to force an extra game. However, Boilermakers Premzl/Villanger closed the set, 7-5, to claim the doubles point.

On the singles side, Court Three finished first, as Sysoev downed Stefan Simeunovic in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Next, Johann bested Maj Premzl on Court Four, 6-2, 6-3, to put the Big Red in the lead. At No. 1 singles, Mueller defeated Juan David Velasquez, 6-3, 6-3, pushing the team score to 3-1. To clinch the match,  Wells notched his sixth win on Court Six in back-to-back sets, 6-4, 6-3, for a Nebraska victory. 

Roni Hietaranta and Fathalla went unfinished on Court Five, as well as Shepp and Villanger at No. 2 singles.

With the win, the Huskers improved on their 2023-24 record through 17 matches, now 11-6. Sysoev notched his 20th victory of the season, while Wells tallied his 17th. NU is now 7-8 all-time against the Boilermakers.
