The Nebraska women’s tennis team (10-3, 0-2 B1G) battled to the finish, but fell 4-2 to Michigan State (9-4, 1-1 B1G) on Sunday afternoon.
Action started with doubles. Michigan State earned the first win as Issey Purser and Oriana Parkins-Godwin topped Emma Rizzetto and Tiziana Rossini 6-3 on Court 2. On Court 1, Ana Zamburek and Lucy Loy evened the doubles score with a 6-4 victory over MSU’s Liisa Vehvilainen and Ellie Blackford. The doubles point was decided on Court 3 as Maria Taranova and Reya Lee Coe battled, but fell to Matilde Morais and Amara Brahmbhatt 6-3.
Singles play then started with the Huskers down 1-0. Zamburek shut out Vehvilainen in set one on Court 1 6-0 and went on to win 6-4 in the second set and even the match. Michigan State earned the next point as Coe fell on Court 4 to Morais 6-2, 6-3, but Nebraska responded quickly to even the score at 2-2 as Taranova won on Court 3 over Brahmbhatt (7-6 (0), 6-2). The Huskers fought to third-set tiebreakers in each of the remaining three matches, but MSU persevered. On Court 2, Blackford defeated Rizzetto on Court 2 (6-3, 4-6, 7-5) and Parkins-Godwin topped Loy on Court 6 (6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-4) to earn the 4-2 victory. Rossini’s match on Court 5 was left unfinished with the Husker leading 3-2 in the final set.
Up next, the Huskers hit the road and will face Northwestern on Friday and Illinois on Sunday.
