Huskers Held Scoreless Against #16 Trojans

On the verge of an upset on Court One, the Huskers came up scoreless on Friday night, in a 4-0 loss to the No. 16 USC Trojans. The No. 72 Nebraska women’s tennis team put up a fight, but fell short in the conference matchup in Lincoln.

The home dual against the Trojans started with doubles outside at the Dillon Tennis Center. Court Three finished first, as Natalia Trigosso and Maria Taranova fell to Charney/Fry, 6-1. Seniors Lucy Loy and Ana Zamburek kept it close at No. 1 doubles, up against nationally ranked No. 7 Fairclough/Piper. The Huskers battled, but lost 6-4, dropping the doubles point. Court Two was left unfinished, as Emma Rizzetto and Reya Lee Coe were tied 4-4 facing Morra/Haddad.

Starting singles, Zamburek was the lone Husker to take a first set. Court Four finished first, as Tiziana Rossini fell 6-2, 6-2 to Fairclough. The Trojans extended their lead to 3-0 with a win at No. 6 singles, where Morra defeated Yuzu Miyoshi, 6-1, 6-1.

USC clinched the match from Court Five, as Sung defeated Coe, 6-4, 6-3. No. 1 singles was abandoned as Zamburek led over No. 62 Piper, 6-3, 6-5. Rizzetto was putting up a fight on Court Three, pushing for a third set. The sophomore left the court at 3-6, 6(2)-6 against No. 103 Haddad. Taranova’s match was also abandoned at No. 2 singles, trailing 5-7, 3-2 facing No. 66 Charney.

With the loss, the Huskers fell to 12-9 (2-8 Big Ten). The Trojans (12-5, 6-3 Big Ten) took the first matchup between programs, and the fourth 4-0 defeat of the season for the Big Red.

The Huskers return on Sunday, April 13, at noon (CT). The final home dual of the season for the team will recognize seniors Lucy Loy and Ana Zamburek prior to the match, starting at 11:40 a.m. (CT). The Big Red will take on #22 UCLA.
