Seven Huskers on the Nebraska track and field team placed top five in their respective events on the first day of competition at the 44 Farms Invitational in College Station, Texas.
Keyshawn Strachan etched his name in school history, winning the javelin title, throwing 80.00m (262-5), the second-furthest mark ever by a Husker. Dash Sirmon (2nd; 76.36m, 250-6), Arthur Petersen (4th; 69.86m, 229-2) and Hayden Gorovitz (8th; 68.73m, 225-6) all claimed top-eight finishes.
Henry Zimmerman finished second in the hammer throw with a mark of 65.95m (216-4). Seth Schnakenberg moved up to ninth in school history, throwing 63.07m (206-11), earning sixth. Brett Schwartz (59.81m, 196-2) and Max Herman (56.00m, 183-9) finished ninth and 17th, respectively.
In the women’s shot put, Kalynn Meyer finished second, throwing 17.44m (57-2 ¾). Kellyn
Kortemeyer added another top-eight finish claiming eighth with a throw of 15.94m (52-3 ¾). Sage Burbach (14.40m, 47-3) and Lauren St. Peters (14.27m, 46-10) earned 19th and 21st.
Three Huskers ended the first day in the top 10 of the decathlon, with Adria Navajon leading the charge in fifth with 3744 points, including a first-place finish in the long jump (7.37m, 24-2 ¼). Brayden Bergkamp finished the day in sixth (3743), highlighted by a first-place finish in the high jump (1.98m, 6-6). Luke Noland sits in ninth, scoring 3713 points.
In the men’s discus, Cade Moran (57.31m, 188-0) was NU’s top finisher, earning fifth. Maxwell Otterdahl (55.80m, 183-1) and Kael Miedema (54.86m, 180-0) added eighth and ninth-place finishes.
The Big Red had six runners in the 800m, with Gabe Nash (1:50.50) being the top finisher earning seventh. Sam Easley (11th; 1:51.04), Kaleb Sharp (14th; 1:51.35), Holden Ruse (15th; 1:51.42), Logan Lebo (24th, 1:52.55) and William McDavid (25th, 1:52.58) rounded out Nebraska’s list of competitors.
Favour Wanjoku finished day one in sixth place with 3384 points, highlighted by a fourth-place finish in the 200m. Grace Parsons is sitting in 20th place with 3014 points which included a fourth-place finish in the shot put.
In the women’s pole vault open, Aspen Fears finished eighth, clearing 3.71m (12-2). Kelsie Belquist finished 12th in the women’s 200m, running 23.64. James Ledbetter placed 14th in the men’s 400mH, running 52.62.
Kavian Kerr finished ninth in the men’s long jump with a mark of 7.29m (23-11). Balvin Israel added a 19th-place finish, jumping 6.92m (22-8 ½).
At the KT Woodman in Wichita, Alea Hardie finished fifth (4:34.35), Jacqueline Abanses placed 12th (4:39.13) and Zoie Ecord was 29th (4:55.12) in the women’s 1500m. In the women’s 800m, Ecord placed 17th (2:18.73). Riley Boonstra finished 17th in the men’s 3000m steeplechase (9:48.42), and Liem Chot ran 31:04.12 in the men’s 10,000m for second.
