With a dominant doubles start and three singles victories, the No. 38 Huskers claimed a program-best seventh conference win on Saturday afternoon. The Nebraska men’s tennis team (14-7, 7-4 Big Ten) swept No. 56 Wisconsin 4-0 in its final road match of the regular season.
The Big Ten dual at Wisconsin began with doubles, and the Huskers put up a powerful performance. Court One finished first as Calvin Mueller and Lars Johann defeated Olsson/Zlatohlavek 6-3. Another 6-3 effort from No. 3 doubles clinched the doubles point for the Big Red, as Colson Wells and Nikolay Sysoev took down Fullerton/Aubert. Court Two was left unfinished, with Henry Bilcic and Anton Shepp leading 5-2 against Minasyan/Meszaros.
Starting singles with the early lead, four Huskers took their first sets. Leo Linquet closed first, defeating Zlatohlavek 6-4, 6-3 on Court Five for the junior’s 30th career singles win. Shepp was next to finish, completing a comeback victory against Meszaros, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 2 singles. Joan Torres Espinosa clinched the match for the Huskers, with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Kumar on Court Six.
The remaining singles matches were left unfinished, with #64 Mueller fighting back at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 6-3. Courts three and four were also abandoned, as Sysoev led 6-3, 6-6, and Johann was a game away from a win, 6-4, 5-4.
Mueller/Johann improved to 4-0 this season, all Big Ten matches, with their win at No. 1, which was also Mueller’s 15th doubles victory on the year. The early wins from NU claimed its 13th doubles point of the season. The Big Red closed the match, improving to 11-2 when winning the doubles point.
The Huskers’ win notched the seventh conference victory of the season, setting a program-best. NU improved to 14-7 (7-4 Big Ten), while the Badgers fell to 9-10 (3-8 Big Ten). The win was only Nebraska’s second in Madison, now 2-8 when facing Wisconsin on the road.
