Throwers Lead Huskers on First Day of Michael Johnson

Waco, Texas - Behind three second-place finishes by the Husker throwers, the Nebraska track and field team completed the first day of competition at the Michael Johnson Invitational on Friday.

On the women’s side, Kalynn Meyer threw 57.30m (188-0) in the discus to earn the second-place finish. Three Huskers placed in the top 10 of the men’s discus, as Cade Moran was fourth (57.19m, 187-7), Brett Schwartz was seventh (55.96m, 183-7) and Maxwell Otterdahl placed 10th (51.33m, 168-5). 

The Huskers men and women combined for five athletes in the top eight of the hammer throw. On the men’s side, Seth Schnakenberg led the way with a second-place finish and throw of 60.47m (198-4). Schwartz was third (60.20m, 197-6) and Max Herman was seventh (57.21m, 187-80). Hillevi Carlsson was the top female with a second-place finish (58.24m, 191-1), followed by Cammy Garabian in fourth (55.71m, 182-9) and Sage Burbach in 17th (48.10m, 157-9). 

For the second-straight week, Dyson Wicker finished in the top five as he cleared 5.27m (17-3 ½) in the men’s pole vault, while Aspen Fears, Kylie Clark-Fox, Arina Razina and Jacelyn Neighbors all cleared 4.02m (13-2 ¼) on the women’s side, finishing fifth through 10th. 

In the women’s long jump, Bariborve Deebom placed in the top 10, as she jumped 5.92m (19-5 ¼) for ninth. Timeke-Jade Coetzee (5.80m, 19-0 ½) and Darby Thomas (5.69m, 18-8) also competed in the event, finishing 16th and 19th respectively. Balvin Israel and Kavian Kerr competed in the men’s long jump, as Israel placed 17th (6.65m, 21-10) and Kerr finished 20th (5.88m, 19-3 ½). 

At the Bryan Clay Invitational in La Jolla, Calif., the eight Huskers competing were highlighted by a trio of top 10 marks. In the women’s 800m, Berlyn Schutz finished 19th as she ran 2:06.29, the seventh-fastest time in school history. Ali Bainbridge ran 16:02.40 in the 5000m, the third-best time in school history, as she placed eighth and Niko Schultz placed eighth in the 800m, running 1:47.39, the sixth-fastest mark all-time. 

Up next, the Huskers continue competition at the Michael Johnson Invitational on Saturday.
