Huskers Face Big Field in Missouri

Written byJeff Griesch
The Nebraska men’s golf team faces its largest tournament field of the season, as the Huskers travel to Missouri for the Tiger Intercollegiate (April 7-8).

The two-day, 54-hole event on a 7,158-yard, par-70 layout of The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia is hosted by Missouri.

Action begins with a shotgun start on Monday, April 7 at 8 a.m. (CT) with two rounds of continuous play. The tournament concludes with Tuesday’s final round beginning at 8 a.m. (CT). Live scoring is available at scoreboard.clippd.com.

Nebraska will be part of an 18-team field that includes Central Arkansas, Central Michigan, Cincinnati, Drake, Iowa State, Kansas State, Lindenwood, Missouri, North Alabama, Oral Roberts, Saint Mary’s, South Dakota, South Dakota State, Stetson, UNLV, UTRGV and Wyoming.

The Huskers head to Missouri following their best tournament performance of the year with a third-place finish in a 16-team field at the Bell Bank “Pay It Forward” Collegiate in Arizona (March 24-25). Hamish Murray and Brodie Cunningham tied for third individually with three-round totals of 209 (-7) to help the Huskers to a season-best 849 (-15).

Murray, a senior from Sydney, Australia, earned Big Ten Co-Men’s Golfer-of-the-Week honors (March 27) for his effort, which included a career-best final-round 66 (-6) on the Gold Course at the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz. He improved his season stroke average to 71.78, which trails only Rudy Sautron among the Huskers.

Sautron, a sophomore from Reunion Island, France, tied for 12th in Arizona with a 212 (-4) that included a second-round 67 (-5). He carries a team-best 71.18 stroke average with six top-25 finishes on the year. Sautron is ranked No. 151 in NCAA Division I, while Murray comes in at 293.

Cunningham, a freshman from Glasgow, Scotland, continues to come on strong in his first season, climbing to No. 458 in the national rankings after his career-best performance in Arizona. Cunningham’s career-best 209 at Bell Bank featured back-to-back rounds of 70 before a career-best 69 (-3) to close the tournament. He owns an impressive 72.00 stroke average over 14 rounds with three top-25 finishes in five events.

Reed Malleck and Evan McDermott continue to solidify the Husker lineup. Malleck, a graduate student from York, Neb., owns a career-best 73.50 stroke average over 20 rounds in the NU lineup. McDermott, a redshirt sophomore from Spring Lake, Mich., carries a career-best 73.48 average and is one of only two Huskers, along with Hamish Murray, to play in all 23 rounds this season.
