Huskers Drop Dual at Maryland

A singles win from Maria Taranova got the Big Red on the board, but it was not enough as the Nebraska women’s tennis team battled and fell, 4-1, at No. 74 Maryland on Sunday afternoon. The No. 65 Huskers (12-8, 2-7 Big Ten) leave the trip east 1-1 on the weekend, as they return to Lincoln for their final home duals.

The Big Ten matchup against the Terrapins began with doubles play. Court Two finished first, as Maryland’s Liu/Hack defeated Emma Rizzetto and Reya Lee Coe 6-1. UMD clinched the doubles point with another 6-1 victory, from Challa/Kovacevic at No. 1 doubles against Ana Zamburek and Lucy Loy. Court Three was left unfinished, as Taranova and Natalia Trigosso were trailing 4-2 to Gagoshidza/Orlinska.

Down early after losing the doubles point, the Big Red began singles competition. Only one Husker claimed a first set, as the Terrapins took charge early. Court Five notched another UMD point, as Gagoshidze defeated Coe 6-0, 6-3. No. 4 singles was next to finish, where Rossini battled but fell 6-1, 6-2, to Orlinska. Notching her 21st singles win of the year, Taranova closed on Court Two, taking down Kovacevic 6-3, 6-1.

Maryland claimed the match at No. 6 singles, as Challa bested Loy, 6-3, 6-3. The Big Red lost the conference dual 4-1, falling to 12-8 (2-7 Big Ten) on the season. The all-time series between Nebraska and Maryland is now tied at 4-4. The Terrapins improved to 13-9 (6-4 Big Ten) after their 2-0 weekend, upsetting No. 28 Iowa on Friday.
