Huskers Stifle Mavericks in Doubleheader

The Nebraska women’s tennis team closed out its opening weekend with two victories over Omaha on Sunday, Jan. 18. The Huskers (3-0) did not drop a singles match against Omaha (0-3) Sunday afternoon. 

NU claimed 10 singles matches and three doubles matches in the doubleheader. 

Doubles play began in the first dual with juniors Emma Rizzetto and Tiziana Rossini on court one, Catherine Gagnon and Katie Spencer on court two and Maria Taranova and Natalia Trigosso on court three. Taranova/Trigosso grabbed the first win of the day over Pearsall/Barber, and Gagnon/Spencer topped Buckels/Smith to secure the doubles point for the Big Red. Court one was left unfinished with Rizzetto/Rossini leading nationally ranked No. 82 Wiese/Kock, 6-5. 

With the doubles point secured in the early afternoon, the Huskers began singles play. Rossini grabbed the first point in singles play for Nebraska on court four, defeating Pearsall, 6-2, 6-1. Trigosso followed on court six, defeating Grace Greenwald 6-0, 6-3, and Spencer defeated Kock 7-5, 6-1 on court three to clinch the victory for NU. With the win secured, the Big Red continued rolling with Taranova besting Wiese on court one, 6-3, 6-3. On court five, Yuzu Miyoshi beat Shelby Smith 6-4, 7-5. Rizzetto tallied the last point of the match for the Huskers, etching out a close comeback victory over Buckels by a score of 3-6, 7-6 [7-4], 10-7 on court two to give NU the 7-0 win. 

In the second dual of the day, doubles play began with Rizzetto and Spencer on court one, Gagnon and Taranova on court two and Miyoshi and Trigosso on court three. The Mavericks took the lead early, with Pearsall/Smith defeating Gagnon/Taranova, 6-3, on court two. Miyoshi/Trigosso kept the Huskers’ chances for the doubles point alive, besting Shannon/Greenwald on court three, 6-3. With the doubles point on the line, Rizzetto/Spencer rallied from down 5-4, but ultimately fell to No. 82 Wiese/Kock, as Omaha secured the doubles point.

Down by one heading into singles play, the Huskers took the court by storm. Miyoshi opened up singles play with a quick 6-1, 6-1 victory over Greenwald on court six to tie the score at 1-1, followed by Gagnon on court four with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win against Shannon. Taranova followed suit with her 6-3, 6-1 victory against Kock, and Trigosso secured the 4-1 win for the Big Red with her 6-2, 6-2 victory on court five over Smith.

The Huskers will stay at home for an evening dual against the Kansas State Wildcats on Friday, Jan. 23. The dual will be held at Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center. Parking and admission are free for fans, and matches will be streamed live on Playsight.
