Big Red 800 Free Relay Sets School Record

The first day of the 2026 women’s swimming and diving Big Ten Championships gave Nebraska a 72-point advantage through a broken school record in the 800 free relay.

The evening of competition kicked off with the 200 medley relay, where a team of Virginia Consiglio, Amelia Riggott, Beatrix Tanko, and Natalie Dunaway garnered a time of 1:39.87. The team came within 0.41 seconds of matching its top performance. In the final dual of the season against Rutgers, the same team set the fifth-best time in the event for the school, 1:39.46.

The dominant team of Gena Jorgenson, Tanko, Riley Miklos, and Giulia Marchi set a school record in the 800 freestyle relay, clocking 7:02.71. The team finished seventh out of 14 teams and dropped 2.07 seconds from their previous record time (7:04.78) at the 2025 Hawkeye Invite.

Jorgenson opened the relay with a lifetime-best performance in the 200 free, clocking a 1:44.82. The swim shattered her previous personal record of 1:46.34, cutting 1.52 seconds off her best time. Her lead-off swim at the Hawkeye Invite produced the second-fastest time in program history, further cementing her place in the school record books.

After the first two events, the Big Red sit in 10th out of 14th with 72 points. Action will resume tomorrow, with swimming trials starting at 10 a.m. and diving trials at noon (CT).
