Nebraska freshmen Kaleigh Babineaux and Ailis Tribolet continued their strong starts to the spring season by tying for sixth individually while helping the Husker women's golf team to a school-record 272 (-16) in the final round on its way to a fourth-place finish at the Westbrook Spring Invitational in Peoria, Ariz., on Monday.
Tribolet, a true freshman from Chandler, Ariz., closed with a three-round total of 207 (-9) on the par-72, 6,293-yard layout of the Vistas Course at the Westbrook Village Golf Club. Her collegiate career-best score included an opening-round 67 (-5) that featured an eagle on the 482-yard, par-5 eighth hole. She followed with a second-round 71 (-1) on Sunday, before closing with a 69 (-3) in Monday's final round.
Tribolet's 207 represented a 10-stroke improvement from her previous collegiate career-best 217 (+1), which came at the UCF Challenge in Orlando (Jan. 25-27). Her sixth-place showing marked her third consecutive top-25 finish and her second-straight top-10 effort of the spring.
Babineaux, a true freshman from Austin, Texas, matched Tribolet stroke for stroke over the 54-hole event, including a final-round 67 (-5) on Monday. Babineaux's final round was highlighted by an eagle on the 469-yard, par-5 14th hole. She opened the tournament with back-to-back rounds of 70 (-2) on Sunday.
Babineaux's 207 eclipsed her previous collegiate best by nine strokes, which came at the UCF Challenge. Her tie for sixth was also a career best, and the first top-10 showing of her young career. It also marked her fifth consecutive top-25 finish of the season.
Hannah Kono put three Huskers in the top 20 by finishing in a tie for 16th at 210 (-6). The junior from Enkoping, Sweden closed the tournament with a final-round 68 (-4) after putting together back-to-back rounds of 71 (-1) on Sunday.
Kono's 210 tournament total was a career best, giving her a three-stroke improvement over her previous career-best 213, which came last season at both the Westbrook and Sam Golden invitationals. Her 16th-place showing was her third top-25 finish of the season, joining a pair of eighth-place performances earlier in the year.
The strong individual performances helped the Huskers finish fourth in a 15-team field that featured four top-40 teams among the 15 teams ranked in the top 115 in the country. The Big Red put together a season-best three-round team score of 838 (-26), finishing just one stroke behind third-place Kansas State, which entered the tournament ranked No. 26 nationally.
No. 35 Missouri won the team title with an 827 (-37), while No. 23 Arizona claimed runner-up honors at 829 (-35).
Nebraska defeated No. 37 Kansas (840, -24) by two strokes, while also beating Georgia (849, -15) and UNLV (850, -14). The Huskers were the top-performing Big Ten team in the tournament, as Rutgers matched UNLV in a tie for seventh at 850, while Minnesota finished ninth at 857 (-7) 19 strokes behind the Huskers.
The hosts from Wisconsin finished 11th at 862 (-2), while Penn State took 12th at 873, 35 shots back of the Big Red.
In all, Nebraska defeated eight teams that entered the tournament ahead of the Huskers in the national rankings.
Lauren Thiele added a career-best three-round total of even-par 216 that featured a career-best 68 (-4) in the final round and a then-career-best 70 (-2) in the second round. The redshirt junior from Wahoo, Neb., finished a tie for 45th.
Symran Shah rounded out the Husker lineup in a tie for 54th with a career-best 220 (+4). The redshirt junior from Carrolltown, Texas fired a career-best 71 (-1) in Sunday's second round.
Olivia Lovegrove, who competed as an individual outside the Nebraska lineup, added a 224 (+8) to tie for 63rd in the 84 player field.
The Huskers hope to keep building on the momentum of back-to-back top-five team finishes as they travel to the SoCal Spring Invitational in Camarillo, Calif., March 8-10.
