No. 6 Huskers perfect through day one

Greensboro, N.C. - The No. 6 Nebraska Bowling team went a perfect 5-0 on day one of the Stallings Invitational The Huskers totaled a pinfall of 5,266 and a 210.6 average, finishing the day in second place.
 
The Huskers return to action tomorrow morning at 7:25 a.m. (central) for the first of five traditional team games against the hosts, North Carolina A&T.
 
The Huskers’ first opponent was Howard. Starters for the Big Red were Desiree Buchert, Abby Starkey, Brenna Hartzler, Karina Capron and Jillian Martin. The match started off close in game one before NU struck four consecutive frames in the back half to take a 201-172 lead. The Huskers continued their strong start with a five-bagger to open the second game. Capron and Martin’s combined four strikes over the final two frames sealed a 233-166 win for the Big Red. Game three saw multiple open frames, but Nebraska held on to narrowly win 182-178. Open frames remained a problem for both squads in game four but the Huskers came out on top again 183-159. The Big Red struggled in game five, allowing the Bison to take their first game 195-169. But, the Huskers were firmly in the lead, taking the match 968-870 to start the weekend with a win. 
 
Kayla Starr checked in for Starkey for NU’s match against Fairleigh Dickinson. The Scarlet and Cream got off to a rocky start before a four-bagger in game one helped put the Huskers ahead 205-181. NU was clean in game two, posting a slim 202-194 win. Game three began with a Nebraska open frame but the Huskers made up for with four-consecutive strikes, with Capron and Martin adding another four-bagger in frames 9 and 10 to close out the game 233-148. Two separate turkeys in game four propelled the Huskers to a 200-167 win, putting them in position to move to 2-0 to start the tournament. The Big Red bowled nine clean frames in game five in a 223-189 win to take the match 1,063-879 for their second match victory. 
 
No. 22 Duquesne was the next matchup. The Huskers started strong, taking game one 222-188. The Big Red capitalized on open frames from the Dukes in game two to win another game 211-152. NU was clean in game three, throwing seven strikes in a dominant 246-170 win. Despite an open frame in game four, the Huskers threw eight strikes in a decisive 233-139 victory. NU capped the match off with a gem, striking another eight frames to win game five 266-182 to take their third match 1,178-859 and move to 3-0. 
 
The next match featured action between the Huskers and No. 18 Monmouth. Going into the match, NU was in first place with a 20-pin lead ahead of second place. Nebraska was clean through nine frames in the first game in a 225-160 win. The Huskers went on to bowl nine strikes in game two to win 256-190 and kept on winning in game three with a six-bagger to claim victory 235-192. Stumbling slightly in game four, the Big Red nevertheless still managed a win 196-191 before sealing it with a 204-189 victory in game five, taking the match 1,116-922.
  
The final match of the day pitted Nebraska against Norfolk State. The Huskers wasted no time in establishing a potent lead, winning the opener by a score of  226-108. The Big Red bowled a clean 197-130 to further their lead in game two. NU prevailed in game three, bagging another win 167-134. The Huskers had more open frames in the fourth game but were still able to hold the lead and win 172-141. The final game of the day Big Red ultimately won 179-147 to take the match 941-660, remaining perfect through day one.
