The Nebraska men’s tennis team defeated North Dakota 4-1 on a Sunday showdown at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln. The Huskers went 1-1 on the weekend to improve to 7-1 on the year.
Coming off yesterday’s loss to Ole Miss where Nebraska won the double's point, today’s match against North Dakota started off a little bit different. North Dakota was awarded the doubles point, winning on court two and three. On court one, Leo Linquet/Nikolay Sysoev (NEB) attempted to put the pressure on North Dakota winning 6-3 vs. Justin Ilic/Kotaro Matsumura (UND). But Nebraska was unable to come back while being down on courts two and three. On court two, Colson Wells/Jeri Lassila (NEB) dropped their match vs. Leo Galliano/Walker Valentine (MISS), 3-6 and Henry Lamchinniah/Joan Torres Espinosa (NEB) fell to Christos Alex/Darrshan Suresh Kumar (UND), 3-6.
In singles play, Nebraska started in the first set even with North Dakota, winning the first set in three of six matches. Niels van der Sijs was the first to finish, dominating in his match vs. Christos Alex, 6-1, 6-1.
After winning the first set against Valentine, 6-1, Espinosa found himself behind 1-4 on court six. The senior eventually came all the way back, winning the second set 6-4 and extending the lead for the Huskers 2-1, adding another win to his win column.
On court two, Linquet secured his match in two sets vs. Suresh Kumar, 6-2, 6-3 to add his sixth singles win of the spring season. On court three, Wells battled it out in a three-set thriller vs. Ilic to win his match and secure the overall match for the Huskers, his second clutch match of the season.
