Huskers Fall in 4-3 Decider

The No. 54 Nebraska men’s tennis fell to Washington 4-3 in a singles match decider on Friday night at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln. The Huskers (9-9, 1-6 Big Ten) dropped two doubles and three singles matches vs. the Huskies (8-10, 2-4 Big Ten) to fall to an 8-4 record at home.  

Starting off in doubles, the Huskers fell behind in doubles on courts one and three. Henry Lamchinniah/Matt Shearer (NEB) fell behind quickly and were unable to come back, losing 6-2 to Soham Purohit/Brett Pearson (UW). At No. 3, Colson Wells/Joan Torres Espinosa (NEB) fought back down 3-5 but ultimately were unable to achieve the comeback vs. Rohan Belday/Stephane Kamendje (UW) falling 4-6. 

The match between Nikolay Sysoev/Henry Bilicic (NEB) vs. Nikola Plavsic/Daniel Bien (UW) was unfinished at 5-6. 

The Huskers started singles off winning five out of the six first sets. First off the court was Espinosa winning his match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1 vs. Bien. Adding his 13th singles win of his career was Lassila, winning in two sets vs. Belday, 6-2, 6-2. No. 81 Sysoev was next to step off the courts, taking his match in two sets vs. Kamendje, 6-4, 6-4. 

Washington earned their first singles win after Wells dropped his match to Pearson after battling in three sets, 1-6, 6-2, 1-6. Another three set battle came in the match between Leo Linquet and Purohit. Linquet fell in three sets to Purohit, 6-3, 2-6, 4-6. 

Niels Van Der Sijs found himself in a hard fought contest on court five vs. Hyoenseok Seo. The two fought back-and-forth, each taking a point and then allowing one back before ending up in a third set tiebreaker at six all. At 9-9 all in the tiebreaker, Seo pulled away from Van Der Sijs to lead by two and take the match as Van Der Sijs fell in a three set battle, 6-2, 6-7, 6-7 which decided the overall match as Nebraska fell to Washington, 3-4.
