Huskers Open Big Ten Play at Home Against Illinois, Northwestern

With a 7-2 record headed into Big Ten play, the Nebraska women’s tennis team is set to host Illinois on Friday, March 6, and Northwestern on Sunday, March 8. The match against the Fighting Illini is set to begin at 5 p.m. (CT), and the match with the Wildcats will start at noon (CT).

NU most recently competed against Charleston Southern, where the Huskers defeated the Buccaneers, 4-0, in Charleston, S.C., on Feb. 22.

Freshman Katie Spencer has captured an impressive debut for the Big Red so far this season, totaling five singles wins and five doubles wins, both of which are tied for most on the team this spring. Reya Lee Coe and Yuzu Miyoshi equaled Spencer, pairing up to both earn their fifth doubles victory at Charleston Southern last time out. Natalia Trigosso is off to a hot start as well, remaining undefeated in both singles and doubles, tied with Spencer for the most singles wins this season. Trigosso is the only remaining undefeated Husker in doubles play.

Illinois (4-6, 0-0 Big Ten)
History: The Big Red trail the all-time series against Illinois, 8-7. Last time they competed, the Huskers fell to the Fighting Illini in Urbana, 4-0. Illinois heads into Lincoln with wins over Miami (OH), DePaul, Iowa State and UMKC. The Fighting Illini have one ranked singles player in No. 34 McKenna Shaefbauer, and a doubles team with Alice Xu and Tess Bucher, who are ranked No. 86 nationally.

Northwestern (7-4, 0-0 Big Ten)
History: Northwestern holds a 15-2 series advantage over Nebraska. Their last matchup was in Evanston, where the Wildcats topped NU 4-0. Northwestern will come into town after a match against the Iowa Hawkeyes in Iowa City on Friday, March 6. The Wildcats have one ranked singles player in Margot Phanthala, who is ranked No. 69 nationally. Northwestern also has two ranked doubles squads, with No. 77 Mika Dagan Fruchtman/Nenna Feldman and No. 87 Phanthala/Erica Jessel.
