The No. 58 Nebraska men’s tennis fell to Purdue by a 4-1 score on Friday at the Schwartz Tennis Center in West Lafayette, Indiana.
The Huskers (10-11, 2-8 Big Ten) dropped two doubles matches and three singles matches in their dual against the Boilermakers (5-12, 1-9 Big Ten).
In doubles, Leo Linquet/Joan Torres Espinosa (NEB) jumped quickly out to a 6-2 start winning their match vs. Jacob Lee/Nikola Jovic (PUR). The Huskers battled it out on the rest of the courts before Matt Shearer/Henry Lamchinniah (PUR) dropped their match in a tiebreaker, 6-7 [6-8] vs. Nour Fathlla/Stefan Simeunovic (PUR). With the doubles point sitting at No. 1, Henry Bilicic/Nikolay Sysoev (NEB) battled down 2-5 to force a tiebreaker match vs. Henrik Villanger/Maj Premzl (PUR) before losing the match 6-7 [5-7].
Nebraska headed into singles play down 1-0. The Huskers started singles off dropping four out of the six first sets, setting them back when it came to the second set of the matches. Espinosa was the first to fall, losing his match in just two sets, 4-6, 4-6 vs. Jovic at No. 6 singles. At No. 3, Colson Wells' match was retired, giving Wells the two set win (6-3, 3-1) and giving Nebraska its first and only point on the day. #112 Sysoev lost his match at No. 1 singles, 6-7, 3-6 vs. Fathalla.
At No. 2, Linquet fought to keep the Huskers in the match but dropped his match vs. Villanger in two sets, 4-6, 4-6 securing the 4-1 win for the Boilermakers.
Niels Van Der Sijs match vs. Lee was left unfinished, in favor of Van Der Sijs, 4-6, 6-3, 5-1. Lassilas’ match was also left unfinished at No. 4 singles.
