Huskers Stun Michigan in Big Ten Tournament

Written byZac Arens

The No. 64 Nebraska men’s tennis team took down No. 39 Michigan, 4-2 in the first round of the Big Ten Men’s Tennis Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Libbey Park in Ojai, Calif.

The No. 10 seed Huskers (12-13) advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament for the sixth year in a row beating out No. 7 seed Michigan (13-10) with four singles wins after dropping the doubles point to the Wolverines.

As NU started out doubles battling for the point, the Huskers were down 4-2 on all three courts. As Michigan broadened its lead in the matches, newly ranked No. 78 doubles pair of Joan Torres Espinosa/Leo Linquet (NEB) fell to Nicholas Steighlehner/Mert Oral (MICH), 2-6. Matt Shearer/Henry Lamchinniah (NEB) were the next to fall at No. 2 doubles dropping their match vs. Alex Cairo/Bjorn Swenson (MICH), 3-6.

Henry Bilcic/Nikolay Sysoev’s (NEB) match was abandoned at 4 all vs. No. 88 Max Dahlin/Pierce Shaya (MICH).

In singles play, the Huskers started by taking four out of the six first sets. Starting at No. 1 singles, No. 117 Sysoev had a tall task facing No. 8 Dahlin where he dropped his match to the Michigan freshman falling in two, 2-6, 2-6. Answering right back at No. 5 singles was Niels Van Der Sijs taking his 10th singles match win of the year over Cairo, 6-2, 6-3. Following the Van Der Sijs win was Espinosa with a win of his own vs. Arnav Bhandari, 6-4, 6-2, tying the overall match 2-2.

At No. 4 singles was freshman Jeri Lassila, winning his match in two sets vs. Steiglehner, 7-5, 6-4 and giving Nebraska the 3-2 lead over Michigan as Colson Wells and Linquet battled on their respective courts.

Wells was the one to complete the upset for the Huskers taking his match in straight sets, 7-6 [9-7], 6-3 vs. Oral as Nebraska took the match over Michigan, 4-2 avenging the loss that came to the Wolverines early in the season.
