No. 19 Huskers Fall to Kansas

No. 19 Nebraska suffered a 5-3 setback to Kansas, as the Jayhawks rallied for four runs over the sixth and seventh innings to snap the Huskers’ 15-game home winning streak on Tuesday night at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.

Nebraska (26-7) scored three runs on five hits and an error, while Kansas (23-10) totaled five runs, seven hits and no errors.

Mac Moyer led the Big Red with a 1-for-4 night and two RBI, and Miken Miller drove in a run on a 1-for-3 performance. Jeter Worthley, Rhett Stokes and Joshua Overbeek each added a hit.

Gavin Blachowicz tossed five solid innings, allowing one run on four hits with four strikeouts. Ryan Harrahill gave up two runs on a pair of hits before Braxton Stewart pitched a scoreless frame. Caleb Clark dropped to 1-2 on the season after surrendering two unearned runs while recording an out.

Kevin Mannell, Jalen Worthley and Grant Cleavinger combined to toss the final 2.2 innings for the NU pitching staff.

Nebraska jumped on the Jayhawks in the second with a pair of runs on three hits. Miller singled and Overbeek singled to put runners on first and second before Drew Grego drew a walk to load the bases. Moyer lined a single through the left side to score Overbeek and Miller and give the Huskers a 2-0 lead.

Kansas got on the board in the fifth when a triple to right field and an RBI single pulled the Jayhawks within 2-1.

The Huskers responded immediately in the bottom of the fifth to stretch the lead to 3-1. Je. Worthley led off the inning with a single up the middle and later came around to score on Miller’s sacrifice fly to center field.

The Jayhawks evened the game at three in the sixth inning with consecutive RBI doubles down the right-field line after a leadoff walk on full count.

Kansas capitalized on an NU error and took the lead for good with two more runs in the top of the seventh. A walk and fielding error put runners on first and second with one out for the Jayhawks.

An intentional walk with two outs loaded the bases, setting up the go-ahead two-RBI singled down the right-field line that plated two unearned runs and gave Kansas a 5-3 lead.

The Husker offense was retired in order in the final three innings to clinch Kansas’ 5-3 win on Tuesday night.

Nebraska returns to Big Ten play this weekend, as the Huskers venture west for a three-game series at Oregon on April 10-12.
