The No. 58 Nebraska men’s tennis team will head to West Lafayette, Ind., to face Purdue (4-14, 0-9 Big Ten) on Friday, April 10 at 5 p.m. (CT) at the Schwartz Tennis Center. The Big Red will then look at a ranked matchup against No. 64 Indiana (9-9, 3-6 Big Ten) at the IU Tennis Center in Bloomington, Ind. on Sunday, April 12 at 11 a.m. (CT).
The Huskers look to improve on their Big Ten Conference record as they aim for a spot in the 10-team Big Ten Tournament. Nebraska sits just outside the top 10 in the conference standings after having played seven ranked opponents through its first nine Big Ten matches with a pair of wins over ranked conference foes.
Redshirt sophomore Colson Wells continues to lead the Huskers in singles with an 11-8 record. After going back-to-back weekends with a singles win, freshman Niels Van Der Sijs was able to improve his singles record to 9-11. In doubles, with a win last Saturday, senior Leo Linquet improved to 11-6.
The Rankings
Nebraska men’s tennis team carries with it this week a No. 58 ITA national ranking. After making its way up the rankings with a ranked upset vs. No. 46 Oregon the Huskers surged from a No. 54 ranking to a No. 49 ranking before falling to No. 36 Wisconsin last weekend. In singles, senior Nikolay Sysoev holds on to a No. 112 ranking with a 9-11 record.
Purdue (4-14, 0-9 Big Ten)
History: Purdue leads a close series vs. Nebraska, 8-7 with the Huskers taking the 4-1 dual win over the No. 52 Boilermakers last season.
The Boilermakers sit at 0-9 in Big Ten Conference play winning four matches on the season vs. Toledo, Old Dominion, Western Michigan and Illinois State.
Ranked Opponents
Purdue’s roster carries one ranked doubles group with the No. 56 pair of Aleska Krivokapic/Maj Premzl who together have a record of 6-1.
Indiana (9-9, 3-6 Big Ten)
History: Indiana leads the narrow series vs. Nebraska, 8-6 with the Huskers completing the ranked sweep vs the No. 62 Hoosiers, 4-0 last season.
The Hoosiers are 3-6 in Big Ten Conference play and 9-9 on the season taking conference wins vs. Washington, Penn State and Purdue.
Ranked Opponents
In doubles, Indiana boasts four different ranked pairs with senior Sam Landau being a part of three out of the four pairs. To start off the rankings for Indiana is No. 37 Matteo Antonescu/Michael Andre holding a 16-5 record. Next is No. 42 Jip Van Assendelft/Landau who carry a 4-2 record. In the middle of the pack is, No. 68 Landau/Braeden Gelletich who as a pair have an undefeated record of 5-0. Rounding it out for the Hoosiers is the No. 78 pair of Facundo Yunis/Landau with a 6-4 record.
