Johansson, Lowka Earn Academic All-America Honors

Nebraska track and field standouts Axelina Johansson and Jana Lowka were honored Wednesday as both were named Academic All-Americans by College Sports Communicators (CSC) on Wednesday.

Johansson was a first-team honoree, marking the third straight season she was a first-team selection on the prestigious team. Johansson is now the first athlete in school history to be a four-time CSC Academic All-American, as she also earned second-team honors in 2023.

From Hok, Sweden, Johansson was crowned the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Shot Put Champion this season, breaking the indoor collegiate record (19.72m, 64-8 ½) and outdoor championship meet record (19.97m, 65-6 ¼) along the way. The senior also owns both the indoor and outdoor school records as well as the Swedish national record.

As a Husker, Johansson was a seven-time First-Team All-American, the 2026 Honda Award for Track and Field winner, the USTFCCCA Women’s National Field Athlete of the Year, a 2026 World Championships Bronze Medalist, a six-time NCAA medalist, and a finalist for The Bowerman. An NCAA postgraduate scholarship winner, she was also named Nebraska’s Outstanding Female Student-Athlete of the Year this spring. She carries a 3.96 GPA in graduate school after earning a degree in journalism and mass communications.

Lowka earned second-team Academic All-America honors after her impressive 2026 campaign. The senior from Frankfurt, Germany, was a Big Ten Silver Medalist in the javelin with a mark of 54.07m (177-5) and capped off her career with a ninth-place finish at NCAA Outdoor Nationals.  She carries a perfect 4.0 GPA in biological sciences and was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar earlier this week.

With today’s selections, Nebraska now has 383 Academic All-Americans which ranks second in Division I and leads all Big Ten programs. In all, Nebraska had 10+ Academic All-Americans for the third straight season and at least one honoree in each of the past 51 years.
