No. 1 Nebraska Soars Past No. 20 Bluejays

No. 1 Nebraska volleyball cruised to a 25-13, 25-15, 25-19 sweep of No. 20 Creighton in front of a program-record indoor home crowd of 15,405 inside Pinnacle Bank Arena on Wednesday night.

The attendance of 15,405 is the largest indoor home crowd in Nebraska volleyball history, surpassing 13,870 against UCLA on Sept. 13, 2009, at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Wednesday’s attendance is also the third-largest attended volleyball match at Pinnacle Bank Arena, trailing a pair of AVCA First Serve matches played in Lincoln last season.

The defense for Nebraska (8-0) shined as the Huskers held No. 20 Creighton (5-5) to a season-low -.033 hitting percentage and picked up nine blocks. The Big Red improved to 25-0 in the all-time series against the Jays.

Kenna Cogill recorded a career-high eight kills and hit .727 to power the Nebraska offense. Andi Jackson led the Huskers with nine kills and added six blocks, and Virginia Adriano chipped in with eight kills.

Harper Murray finished with eight kills, moving her into eighth place in the Nebraska career kills chart in the rally-scoring era.

Bergen Reilly recorded her third double-double of the season, recording 33 assists and 11 digs. Teraya Sigler added a season-high 11 digs, while Olivia Mauch also had 11 digs.

Set 1: Creighton took the first timeout of the set as a Bluejays’ attacking error put the Huskers ahead 11-6. Nebraska led 15 -8 after a Jackson kill, and the Huskers scored six of the last seven points to cruise to an easy first-set win. Nebraska hit .444 and held Creighton to -0.065 hitting.

Set 2: It was back-and-forth early as Creighton tied the score at 12-12 on a block from Eliose Brandewie and Trinity Shadd-Ceres. However, the Big Red took control, first using a 5-0 run, capped by a Murray kill, to take a 17-12 lead. The Huskers extended their advantage to 19-13 on an ace from Laney Choboy, forcing a timeout from the Jays. Creighton scored just two points in the rest of the set as Nebraska took a 2-0 lead in the match.

Set 3: Nebraska used a 5-1 run to take a 13-9 lead and extended its advantage to 15-11 on a Murray kill at the media timeout. The Bluejays trimmed the Husker lead to 19-16, but the Big Red scored three of four to force a CU timeout. Creighton could not get any closer the rest of the way, as Cogill closed the match with her eighth kill to put the Bluejays away and secure the sweep for NU.

No. 1 Nebraska continues its homestand on Friday as the Big Red hosts No. 25 North Carolina inside John Cook Arena at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. First serve between the Huskers and Tar Heels is set for 7 p.m. (CT).
