Nebraska has a proud and storied history filled with great teams, great players and great students. Husker softball has always been about the good of the team and any individual success has always been a byproduct of striving for the greater good. NU has produced great success as a program and has seen individuals thrive under the nurturing environment to become exemplary citizens, All-Americans, academic All-Americans, college graduates and much more.
Although the Nebraska on the front of the jersey has always come first, sometimes the program finds it necessary to single out those individual players who truly epitomized what it was to be a Husker. In this regard, the Nebraska softball program has retired jerseys for only five of its best and brightest.
Lori Sippel was the first to have the honor bestowed upon her when her No. 16 jersey was retired on April 30, 1995. Teammate Denise Day was next, as her No. 10 jersey was retired on April 17, 1999. Julie Geis, a victim of the Sept. 11 attacks and a pioneer for women's athletics, had her jersey retired when her No. 15 jersey was enshrined on Oct. 12, 2001. Peaches James had her jersey retired on Oct. 2, 2010, while Ali Viola was had her jersey retired in the fall of 2018. Taylor Edwards is the most recent player to have her jersey retired. Her jersey retirement was announced in the fall of 2023 with the actual ceremony occuring during the 2024 season.
