Luca Virgilio is in his sixth year as Director of Basketball Strategies & Business Operations. At Nebraska, Virgilio is responsible for all men’s basketball operations overseeing budget, scheduling and on campus recruiting. He also serves as the primary day-to-day administrator within the basketball office, coordinating team travel and serving as a liaison to administration, academics, HuskerVision, athletic communications, creative and emerging media, marketing and life skills.
Virgilio came to Nebraska after spending five seasons at St. John’s, most recently as a management analyst for the Red Storm basketball program for two seasons. He was a part of the St. John’s staff which made a pair of NCAA Tournaments (2015 and 2019) in his tenure at the school.
In his role as St. John’s management analyst, Virgilio was responsible for devising and delivering strategies to improve basketball operations by using advanced knowledge of research methods, information management and quantitative methods to analyze all areas of the program. Virgilio assisted the coaching staff by preparing analytical reports, delivering recommendations and overseeing the implementation of these strategies for practice and training, style of play, scouting, scheduling and recruiting.
During his time as assistant to head coach Chris Mullin, Virgilio provided support for a variety of daily operations within the program. His responsibilities included managing the team’s schedule, organizing travel and supervising student-athlete development activities. Virgilio also assisted with the coordination of on-campus recruiting activities, maintaining NCAA compliance-related records and other duties as assigned by the head coach.
He began his tenure as a graduate assistant for two years, where he helped in daily operations, including the team calendar and overseeing the team’s managers. Virgilio also aided both the assistant to the head coach and director of basketball operations with administrative responsibilities and team operations.
Virgilio graduated from St. John’s in May 2016, earning a master’s degree in sport management with a concentration in international dimension of sport. Hailing from Italy, Virgilio earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and business administration at Universita degli Studi di Roma Tre in 2012 and a master’s of science in business administration at Tor Vergata School of Economics in 2014.
He and his wife, Caterina, have a son, Giulio.
