Redshirt Sophomore (2024-25)
After taking a redshirt season a year ago, Evan McDermott showed that he is ready to contend for regular lineup time at Nebraska. The redshirt sophomore from Spring Lake, Mich., earned the No. 1 spot in the Husker lineup at the season-opening Gopher Invitational (Sept. 8-9) and put up a three-round total of 223 (+10) to tie for 38th in an 80-player field. McDermott closed the tournament with a final-round 72 (+1) at the Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn. He helped the Huskers to a third-place team finish among 15 teams in a strong field.
He performed at an even higher level the next time out with a career-best 211 (-2) over 54 holes to tie for 11th individually at Nebraska's Git-R-Done Invitational (Sept. 23-24). McDermott fired a career-best 67 (-4) in the second round on the par-71, 7,003-yard layout at Firethorn, before closing with a 70 (-1) to help Nebraska to a fifth-place team finish.
McDermott followed with another lineup appearance at the Badger Invitational in Verona, Wis. (Sept. 29-Oct. 1), where he was Nebraska's No. 3 finisher in a tie for 36th within a 90-player field. He closed with a three-round total of 222 (+6) on the par-72, 7,286-yard layout at the University Ridge Golf Course, including a 71 (-1) in the second round.
He continued to play solid golf at the Qubein Cup (Oct. 14-15), tying for 26th with a 54-hole score of 222 (+12). McDermott put together rounds of 74, 71 and 77 on the par-70, 7,130-yard layout of the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., to help Nebraska to a third-place finish in a loaded 13-team field that included nine 2024 NCAA Regional teams.
McDermott closed the fall in the lineup at the Steelwood Collegiate in Loxley, Ala. (Oct. 26-27). He struggled to a three-round total of 233 (+17) despite an even-par 72 in the second round on the 7,096-yard layout at the Steelwood Country Club.
McDermott ended the fall with a 74.07 stroke average while joining Rudy Sautron and Hamish Murray as the only Huskers to compete in all 15 rounds of the 2024-25 fall schedule in the Nebraska lineup.
During the summer of 2024, McDermott took third at the Nebraska Amateur Championship, trailing only Husker teammates Reed Malleck and Hamish Murray at the top of the leaderboard.
The mechanical engineering major has contributed off the course by earning Academic All-Big Ten honors and a spot on the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team in 2024.
Redshirt (2023-24)
McDermott took a redshirt season in his second year as a Husker in 2023-24. Off the course, McDermott earned Academic All-Big Ten honors and was named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team. He also finished third behind champion Reed Malleck and runner-up Hamish Murray at the 2024 Nebraska Amateur Championship in July.
Freshman (2022-23)
McDermott produced a solid season by tying for third among the Huskers with 20 rounds played while posting a 75.45 stroke average.
He made immediate contributions in the fall, competing in the Husker lineup at the Purdue and White Sands invitationals after playing as an individual outside the Husker lineup at the season-opening Badger Invitational.
McDermott capped the fall with a career-best 216 (67-74-75) that included a career-best 67 (-5) at the White Sands Invitational in Paradise Island, Bahamas (Oct. 28-30). He tied for 32nd overall as NU’s No. 3 finisher at the event. His effort in the Bahamas followed a tie for 41st at Purdue with a 228 (74-74-80), Oct. 10-11.
McDermott opened the season as Nebraska’s top finisher by tying for sixth with a 148 (72-76) while playing as an individual at the rain-shortened Badger Invitational (Sept. 11-13).
He opened the spring by going 1-2 at the Big Ten Match Play, before carding a 232 (76-75-81) at The Prestige (Feb. 20-22). He was the No. 2 finisher in Nebraska’s lineup in California, before earning his final lineup appearance of the year at the Desert Mountain Collegiate in Scottsdale (March 4-5). He was NU’s No. 4 finisher in Arizona with a 234 (77-75-82).
McDermott competed as an individual at the Stampede at the Creek in Elkhorn (April 11-12), where he finished 13th with a 220 that included back-to-back 70s (-2) in the first and second rounds before settling for a final-round 80.
He also played as an individual at the Fighting Illini Spring Collegiate (April 28), tying for 45th with a 231 (78-77-76).
Before Nebraska
The 2022 Michigan High School Division 2 runner-up, McDermott also tied for third at the Division 2 State Championships in 2021, while helping Spring Lake to a top-10 team finish.
His performance included a second-round 68. He fired the best round of his prep career with a 64 at Terra Verde.
McDermott took medalist honors at the 2022 Michigan Lower Peninsula Division 2 Regional tournament at Lincoln Hills in Ludington after firing a 69, leading Spring Lake to the regional team title. He ranked No. 1 in the state when factoring in nine-hole qualifying rounds and No. 3 in 18-hole qualifying as a senior.
In August of 2021, McDermott competed at the Golfweek Junior Tour event at Notre Dame, taking the top spot in a 51-golfer field at the 36-hole tournament. His performance featured six birdies and an eagle. He added a top-10 finish on the Golfweek Junior Tour at Kettering, Ohio in October, carding back-to-back rounds of 73.
Personal
The son of Marty and Rachel McDermott, Evan was born Nov. 30, 2003. A mechanical engineering major, he earned Academic All-Big Ten accolades in 2024. He is a three-time member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll. He also earned a spot on the 2024 Tom Osborne Citizenship Team. He is serving on the Nebraska Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in 2024-25.
McDermott brought strong ties with him to Nebraska. His uncle, Greg, is the head men’s basketball coach at Creighton, while Evan’s cousin, Doug, was a three-time All-American at Creighton and is in the NBA.
