  Before Nebraska 
  Härtel brings impressive long-course times with her to Nebraska in the distance freestyle events. At the 2025 German National Championships, Härtel competed in the 800 free (9:03.8) and the 400 free (4:28.41).  In the German Age Group Championships in June 2025, Härtel dropped several seconds from her previous times in the 800 free (8:58.62) and the 400 free (4:21.46). She also recorded a career best in the 1,500 free with a 17:08.25, before dropping nearly eight seconds off that time in June (17:00.42). The up-and-coming freestyler claimed a bronze medal in the 1500 free and 200 free (2:05.06) in the long-course championships. 
  
  Personal
  The daughter of Markus and Silke Andrea Härtel, Jana was born January 17, 2007. She has one younger sister, Anika. She is planning on studying business when she arrives to Nebraska. 
  
  "I chose Nebraska because it just felt right for me. Even without an official visit, I had a really good feeling and was impressed by the program, the coaches, the team, and the overall environment."
