2019-20 (Senior)
Carla Gonzalez-Garcia capped a memorable Nebraska career as one of Nebraska's top sprint freestylers and backstrokers as a senior in 2019-20. She represented the Huskers in the 100 back (54th), 100 free (63rd) and 200 free (70th), while also swimming the second leg of Nebraska's 400 free relay team at the 2020 Big Ten Championships. Gonzalez-Garcia posted 10 top-five finishes during the season, including a victory in the 100 freestyle in Nebraska's season-opening dual win over South Dakota State. In the classroom, she captured academic All-Big Ten accolades for the third consecutive season.
2018-19 (Junior)
Gonzalez-Garcia competed in the freestyle and backstrokes for the Huskers as a junior in 2018-19, producing three top-five finishes, including a runner-up finish against Kansas in the 200 free. She collected a pair of fourth-place finishes against Rutgers in the 100 and 200 free. The three-time letterwinner was a member of the second-place 800 free relay team (Savannah Savitt, Allie Worrall, Gonzalez-Garcia, Autumn Haebig) at the Hawkeye Invite. At the 2019 Big Ten Championships, Gonzalez-Garcia produced two career bests by swimming to a time of 50.69 in the 100 free (27th) and in the 200 free prelims (1:47.95). She earned a 24th-place finish in 200 free and a 35th-place finish in the 100 back. She was an academic All-Big Ten selection and earned a spot on the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.
2017-18 (Sophomore)
Gonzalez-Garcia performed well for the Huskers in 2017-18, racking up eight top-five finishes, including a victory and a runner-up finish. She set personal bests in three of her four events. She set three career bests at the 2018 Big Ten Championships with times of 1:48.37 in the 200-yard freestyle, 54.74 in the 100-yard backstroke, and 1:58.87 in the 200-yard backstroke. She appeared in multiple relays, including the 200 free, 200 medley, 400 free and the 400 medley. Gonzalez-Garcia earned academic All-Big Ten honors and claimed an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award.
2016-17 (Freshman)
Gonzalez-Garcia exploded onto the scene by earning two victories and five runner-up finishes among her 11 top-five finishes as a freshman for the Huskers in 2016-17. During her debut at the Big Ten Championships, Gonzalez-Garcia placed 49th (2:02.20) in the 200 backstroke, 50th (56.16) in the 100 back and 52nd (1:50.60) in the 200 free, setting a career best. Gonzalez-Garcia also got off to a strong start in the classroom and the community, earning spots on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the fall and spring before becoming a member of the 2017 Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.
Previous
Gonzalez-Garcia swam for James Martin High School in Arlington, Texas, under Coach Jon Ivonen. She was a nine-time district champion at James Martin. Gonzalez-Garcia helped James Martin High School take fifth place at Regionals by reeling in a victory in the 200 individual medley. She earned All-America and all-state honors in Texas and was Arlington’s April 2014 student-athlete of the month. Gonzalez-Garcia was a three-time state finalist. She is also a member of the Venezuelan National Team and went to the 2015 Pan American Games. She was a member of National Honor Society, French National Honor Society and an honor student.
Personal
The daughter of Maria Garcia and Gilberto Gonzalez, Carla was born Dec. 17, 1997 in Merida, Venezuela. Carla has one older brother, Carlos. An accounting and finance major, Carla is a three-time academic All-Big Ten selection. She is a six-time Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll choice and a three-time member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team (2017, 2018, 2019). She chose Nebraska over Rutgers and South Carolina.
