Alexis Markowski Season 2024-25

Outlook (2024-25)
Alexis Markowski earned preseason first-team All-Big Ten honors for the third consecutive year ahead of the 2024-25 season. The 6-3 center out of Lincoln Pius X High School has been a leader for her hometown Huskers the past three seasons and hopes to battle for national honors while leading Nebraska to a fourth straight postseason bid.

Junior (2023-24)
Markowski captured first-team All-Big Ten honors as one of the nation's top centers in 2023-24. She added a spot on the Big Ten All-Tournament Team after a monster effort in leading the Huskers to three wins before pushing No. 3 Iowa to overtime in the Big Ten Championship Game.

Markowski was a Lisa Leslie Award contender before producing a career-high 19 double-doubles and averaging career bests of 15.7 points and 10.5 rebounds as a junior. She ranked third in the Big Ten in rebounding and seventh in scoring on the year.

She tied the Nebraska career double-doubles record held by first-team All-America forwards Kelsey Griffin (2006-10) and Jordan Hooper (2011-14) by notching her 40th double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds to go along with five assists against No. 3 Iowa in the Big Ten Championship Game (March 10).

In four games at the TIAA Big Ten Tournament at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Markowski averaged 16.5 points, 11.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists.

Markowski's 45 rebounds at the 2024 Big Ten Tournament were nine more than any other Husker in a single conference tournament in history. Her 66 points tied for the fourth-most by a Husker in any tournament, and her 15 assists ranked fifth by a Husker at a league tournament, trailing only the three best point guards in NU history - Lindsey Moore (19, 2012), Jaz Shelley (34, 2024; 16, 2022) and Rachel Theriot (30, 2014, Tournament MVP).

In a Big Ten quarterfinal win over Michigan State (March 8), Markowski produced 22 points, 12 boards and four assists.

Nebraska's team co-MVP along with Shelley during the season, Markowski notched eight 20-point games in 2023-24, including a 20-point, 21-rebound effort in a win at Purdue (Feb. 17). The 21 boards were a career high and tied for the fourth-best rebounding total in Husker history.

Markowski's 369 rebounds in 2023-24 marked the third-highest total in school history trailing only career rebound leader Janet Smith (1,280), who had 417 (1980-81) and 372 (1979-80) in back-to-back seasons.

Markowski opened Big Ten Play with 13 points and 17 rebounds in a win at Michigan State (Dec. 9), before getting 20 points and 10 boards in a win over Maryland (Dec. 31). In between, she had a game-high 21 points in a win over Southern (Dec. 17) and game highs of 19 points and 11 boards at Kansas (Dec. 20).

Markowski had 15 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals in NU's win over No. 2 Iowa (Feb. 11). She also had 15 points and 11 boards at No. 5 Iowa (Jan. 27), after going for 16 points and 19 boards at Penn State (Jan. 21). She had 17 points and 14 rebounds at Minnesota (Jan. 14), which followed 14 points and 15 rebounds in a win over Illinois (Jan. 11). She had 13 points and 11 boards in a win at Wisconsin (Jan. 4). Markowski had 21 points, including a season-high three threes against No. 14 Indiana (Jan. 7).

She had 18 points and 12 rebounds in a win over UNCW (Dec. 5). It followed 15 points and 10 boards in a win over Georgia Tech (Dec. 2) and an 18-point, 10-board effort in a win over FAU (Nov. 29). She also had 14 points and 14 rebounds against TCU (Nov. 25). She notched her first double-double of the season with game highs of 17 points and 13 rebounds in a win at Wyoming (Nov. 10).

Markowski erupted for a season-high 24 points against No. 22 Creighton (Nov. 19), after putting up 20 points and nine boards in a win over Alcorn State (Nov. 14). She had 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting in a win over Lamar (Nov. 23). She had 18 points and nine rebounds in a Big Ten road win at Michigan (Feb. 6). She added 12 points and 10 boards in a win over Northwestern (Feb. 10), which followed 10 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Minnesota (Feb. 24).

Sophomore (2022-23)
Markowski enjoyed a solid season as one of the top posts in the nation in 2022-23. She was one of 10 midseason contenders for the Lisa Leslie Award in 2023. She was also a member of the Naismith Trophy Watch List.

Markowski captured second-team All-Big Ten honors for the second straight season, playing in the same conference with Lisa Leslie finalists Mackenzie Holmes (Indiana) and Monika Czinano (Iowa, 2). Markowski, who was the only non-senior/graduate student among the 10 Leslie Award finalists, also went head-to-head against three more of the other seven finalists - Elizabeth Kitley (Virginia Tech), Jessika Carter (Mississippi State) and Taiyanna Jackson (Kansas, 2) - during the year. Overall, Markowski played seven games against the top 10 centers in the country.

Markowski finished the season by averaging 11.9 points and a Big Ten-best 9.8 rebounds, while leading Nebraska and tying for seventh in the conference with 31 blocks. She scored in double figures 23 times in 33 games, while adding 19 double-digit rebound performances.

The only Big Ten player to average a double-double (12.4 ppg, 10.2 rpg) during the regular season, Markowski finished with 15 double-doubles on the year, trailing only national player of the year Caitlin Clark among Big Ten players in double-doubles. Markowski's double-double total tied for third on Nebraska's single-season list behind only All-American Kelsey Griffin (20, 2009-10) and Nafeesah Brown (16, 1993-94).

Markowski also led the Big Ten with 322 total rebounds overall, matching Kendall Bostic from Illinois with 9.8 rebounds per game to lead the conference. Markowski's 322 rebounds marked the fifth-highest single-season total in Nebraska history.

She erupted for a season-high 24 points and a career-high 18 rebounds in a win over Tarleton (Nov. 22). She also tied a career best with three blocks against the Texans. It followed a 21-point effort at Drake (Nov. 19), which came on the heels of her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds at No. 20 Creighton (Nov. 15).

Markowski finished the regular strong with nine double-doubles over the final 14 games, producing 12 games with double-figure points and 11 games with double-digit rebounds during that stretch. She entered the Postseason WNIT after getting 12 points and 13 rebounds against Michigan State in the Big Ten Tournament (March 2). She also put up 16 points and 14 rebounds in a win over Northwestern (Feb. 26). In the win over the Wildcats, Markowski recorded career bests by hitting 9-of-11 free throws.

She produced 18 points and a career-high-tying 18 rebounds at No. 12 Michigan (Feb. 12) after getting 14 points and 11 boards against Illinois (Feb. 9). Those games capped a string of five straight double-doubles that began with 12 points and 11 boards at No. 10 Iowa (Jan. 28). Markowski followed with 11 points and 13 rebounds in a win over Michigan State (Feb. 2), before getting 11 points and 10 rebounds in a road win at Northwestern (Feb. 6).

Markowski had 19 points and 10 rebounds in a win at Purdue (Jan. 18), including 11 points and six rebounds in the fourth quarter to fuel a rally from a nine-point third-quarter deficit on the road. She added a Big Ten double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds in a win over Penn State (Jan. 11). She finished the season with nine double-doubles against Big Ten foes.

Markowski notched her third consecutive double-double with 18 points and a team-high 10 rebounds in Nebraska’s 3OT win over No. 20 Kansas (Dec. 21). She added three assists, two blocks and two steals against the Jayhawks. Her performance in the win over Kansas followed a double-double with 22 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in a win over Wyoming (Dec. 18) to earn the first Big Ten Player-of-the-Week award of her career (Dec. 19). Her double-double against Wyoming came on the heels of a 16-point, 15-rebound effort in a win over Samford (Dec. 10).

Markowski nearly doubled her assist total (35-18) from 2021-22 and led the Huskers with 31 blocked shots on the year.

Freshman (2021-22)
Markowski was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and the only unanimous choice by the league coaches to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. She was also a second-team All-Big Ten selection after winning eight Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Week awards.

The only Power Five freshman to average 12.0 points (12.8 ppg) and 6.0 rebounds (8.0 rpg), Markowski averaged 15.4 points, 9.1 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 0.8 blocks in 20 games as a starter. She was the USBWA National Freshman of the Week (Jan. 11) after averaging 17.0 points and 7.5 rebounds while making her first career starts against top-25 Michigan and Iowa teams. Markowski posted six 20-point games, including 22 in a Big Ten Tournament win over Illinois (March 3). She also produced six double-doubles.

She had 16 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Northwestern (Feb. 27), after getting 10 points and a season-high 15 rebounds in a win over No. 5 Indiana (Feb. 14). She had 23 points and 15 boards at No. 21 Ohio State (Feb. 10). Markowski notched her first career 20-point game and grabbed seven rebounds in a 79-58 win over No. 8 Michigan in her first career start (Jan. 4). She added 23 points and seven rebounds at Penn State (Feb. 17), before going for 15 points and nine boards in a win over Minnesota (Feb. 20). She also had 14 points and eight rebounds against No. 22 Iowa (Jan. 9).

Markowski erupted for a career-high 27 points on 10-of-12 shooting, including 6-of-7 threes) at Iowa (Jan. 16). She had 16 first-quarter points, outscoring the Hawkeyes 16-14 to help NU to a 30-14 lead. She had 23 points, including 20 in the second half, in a win over Purdue (Jan. 30).

She led NU with 17 points, seven rebounds and three steals at No. 6 Indiana (Jan. 13), before getting 16 points and 15 boards in a win over Rutgers (Feb. 1). She led NU with 18 points in a win over Penn State (Feb. 3).

Markowski scored in double figures in 18 of NU's last 21 games, including 10 points and nine boards against Gonzaga in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Louisville (March 18).

She notched her first double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in a run past Indiana State (Dec. 11). She added a double-double with 15 points and 10 boards in a win over Drake (Dec. 19). She had 15 points in a win over Wisconsin (Jan. 27) and 14 in a win over Prairie View A&M (Nov. 11). She added 11 points in 12 minutes in a win over Creighton (Nov. 17) and 11 points at Michigan State (Dec. 30).

High School
Markowski was the Nebraska Gatorade and MaxPreps State High School Player of the Year after averaging 23.3 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks while leading Lincoln Pius X to a second straight Class A state title in 2021. She averaged 23.7 points and 19.3 rebounds in three tournament wins for the 2500 Thunderbolts. Markowski scored a Pius X school-record 42 in a win over Fremont (Jan. 2, 2021). The state's leading rebounder, she had 16 double-doubles and pulled down 20 or more boards four times. In a state semifinal win over Omaha Central, she had 30 points and 27 rebounds in a 47-38 win. She added 27 points and 19 boards in a title game win over Fremont. As a junior, she averaged 21.5 points and 12.1 rebounds. She tied the Class A tournament record with 80 points in leading Pius X to the 2020 title. She earned Class A All-Tournament honors for the second time and was the captain of the All-Nebraska and Super-State teams. She finished with school records of 1,484 points and 867 rebounds over 76 games (19.5 ppg, 11.4 rpg). She missed her freshman season (2017-18) with a foot injury. She played for the Nebraska Lasers and was coached by her father Andy.

Personal
The daughter of Andy and Jaime Markowski, Alexis was born July 13, 2003, in Toledo, Ohio. Alexis has two younger sisters, Adison and Ava, and a younger brother, Jake. Alexis' father, Andy, was a 6-8 forward for the Husker men's basketball team from 1994-95 to 1998-99. He was a two-time team captain (1998, 1999) and was a member of four Nebraska postseason teams, helping the Huskers to the 1998 NCAA Tournament and the 1996 NIT championship.

A management major, Alexis earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2023 and 2024. She is a four-time selection to the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll and a three-time member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team. She traveled to Ecuador with Nebraska's NoFilter Service Trip abroad in August of 2024.
