One of the top passing point guards in Nebraska history, Ami Beiriger closed her career as NU's all-time assist leader and still ranks among the Huskers' career top 10 in that category. The 5-5 guard from Hastings, Neb., amassed 342 assists despite missing all of her senior season with an injury.
Beiriger enjoyed her best season as a junior when she averaged 11.7 points and 2.4 rebounds while dishing out 3.8 assists per game, including a career-high 11 against Creighton on Jan. 21, 1981, which still ranks as one of the top-10 efforts in NU history. She shot 44.5 percent from the field and 71.9 percent from the free throw line while grabbing 76 steals, a total that still ranks among the 10 best individual totals in Husker history.
Beiriger closed her junior season with 841 career points and appeared poised to join Nebraska's 1,000-point club as a senior, but sat out the 1981-82 season as a redshirt and appeared in just seven games as a fifth-year senior in 1982-83, when she scored just six points.
After making an instant impact as a freshman in 1978-79 when she joined the starting lineup late in the year and averaged 6.4 points, 1.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game on the season, Beiriger improved as a sophomore. She averaged 8.0 points, 2.2 rebounds and a career-high 3.9 assists per game as a starter throughout the year. Her 133 assists in 1979-80 rank as one of the top five totals by a sophomore in school history.
Beiriger was a high school All-American in basketball and an all-state performer in basketball, volleyball and track at Hastings St. Cecilia High School.
The daughter of Bernard and Jean Beiriger, Ami was born Dec. 25, 1959. She was a physical education major at Nebraska.
