Brett Maher is in his third season on the Nebraska coaching staff in 2026 and his first season as special teams coordinator. In 2025, Maher was the assistant special teams coach and during the 2024 season, Maher joined the staff in season and worked with the Husker place-kickers and punters.
Maher entered the coaching ranks following an outstanding collegiate and professional career. As a punter and place-kicker at Nebraska, Maher was both the Big Ten Kicker and Punter of the Year in 2011, and he was a two-time Big Ten Kicker of the Year.
Maher went on to kick five seasons in the NFL, where he made 80 percent of his field goals. At the conclusion of his career, Maher held NFL records for most 60-yard field goals in a season (2) and career (4). Maher also set five Dallas Cowboys records during his career, including making the longest field goal in franchise history (63 yards) and scoring the most points by a kicker in a season (137).
NEBRASKA (2024-25)
Maher served as Nebraska's assistant special teams coach in 2025 in his first full season of coaching. Maher helped kicker Kyle Cunanan make 61 of his 64 total kicks on the season, including 16-of-19 field goals.
Maher also contributed to Nebraska ranking ninth nationally in blocked punts in 2025, 10th in blocked kicks, 13th in punt return defense, kickoff returns and kickoff return defense and 15th in punt returns. NU allowed only 23 punt return yards to its opponents, the lowest total in 31 years.
Individuals also put up impressive numbers in 2025. Jamir Conn ranked second nationally in blocked kicks, Kenneth Williams was sixth in kickoff return touchdowns and Jacory Barney Jr. was 13th in punt returns and 15th in combined kick returns. Williams and Barney each earned All-Big Ten accolades as a returner.
Maher joined Nebraska mid-season in 2024. He helped John Hohl tie the Nebraska record for longest road field goal when Hohl made a 54-yard field goal at Ohio State. Hohl made nine of his final 10 field goals in 2024.
PLAYING CAREER (NEBRASKA/NFL)
A Nebraska native, Maher was Nebraska's starting punter and place-kicker during his Husker career. He was a two-time Big Ten Kicker of the Year and in 2011, Maher was both the Big Ten Kicker and Punter of the Year. As a senior in 2012, Maher made 20 field goals to rank second in school history while setting a Nebraska record with 119 points scored by a kicker. He was the Big Ten co-Kicker of the Year in 2012 and was also a first-team All-Big Ten selection as a kicker and a second-team all-conference pick as a punter. As a junior in 2011, Maher was the Big Ten Kicker and Punter of the Year. He made 19-of-23 field goals and averaged 41.4 yards per punt.
Maher spent five seasons in the NFL, where he made 80 percent of his career field goals. Maher made 111 career field goals, including 34 from 50 yards or longer. In 2018 with the Dallas Cowboys, Maher tied a franchise record for most field goals 50 yards or longer, a record he would break in 2022. In 2019, Maher made a 63-yard field goal to set the Cowboys' record for longest field goal in a game. In his final season as a Cowboy in 2022, Maher made 29-of-32 kicks during the regular season, including 9-of-11 from 50 yards or longer. He set a Cowboys single-season kicking record with 137 points and led the league with 78 touchbacks.
At the conclusion of his career, Maher held the NFL record for most career 60-yard field goals. Prior to the NFL, Maher spent time in the Canadian Football League.

Maher earned his degree in secondary education - mathematics from Nebraska and was an Academic All-Big 12 selection.
