Dr. Michael Stout joined Nebraska in the summer of 2024 and is in his first season as the Huskers' director of football mental performance. In his role, Stout works with Nebraska football players to help them compete at their peak potential and foster a sense of mental wellbeing on and off the field.
Stout came to the Huskers after serving as a provisionally licensed psychologist at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Counseling Center in Lincoln. Previously, he worked as an advanced practicum student at Park Avenue Center (2021-22), a substance use and mental health treatment facility in Minneapolis. Stout also gained experience as an advanced practicum student at Parker Collins Family Mental Health (2020-21), as a therapy practicum student at the Union Gospel Mission (2019-20) and as an assessment practicum student at Gary L. Fischler & Associates (2018-19).
Before his practicum experience, Stout was a lead master resilience trainer-performance expert from 2013 to 2017 for active duty soldiers at Fort Knox (Ky.) and Fort Wainwright (Alaska) as part of the Comprehensive Soldier and Family Fitness Program. Previously, Stout served as a performance psychology intern for one year at the IMG Academy in Florida. That came after he was a sport psychology consultant at Ball State (2010-13).
Stout earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from DePauw in 2009. He completed his master's degree in sport and exercise psychology in 2013 from Ball State. Stout received his doctor of psychology degree in clinical psychology from Augsburg University in 2023.
