In his first season with the Huskers, Scherwinski helped the Big Red to their third-straight appearance in the second round of the NCAA Championships. He served as the lead coach on vault and one of the lead coaches on floor. With his help, nineteen Nebraska athletes notched career highs during 2024-25, including three on vault. Five Huskers earned a career high on the floor with Scherwinski’s help.
Sam Scherwinski was hired as an assistant coach for the Nebraska women’s gymnastics team in May 2024.
Prior to coaching for the Huskers, Scherwinski served the Lindenwood Lions as the team’s main uneven bars coach. For his success with the Lions in 2024, he was named the USA Gymnastics Assistant Coach of the Year and the MIC Assistant Coach of the Year. Two of his athletes won conference titles on uneven bars and in the all-around, and in its final year of existence, the team broke six all-time program records. Scherwinski also helped Lindenwood athletes to 14 USAG All-America honors.
In 2023, Scherwinski coached the Lions to the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championship, where two athletes won individual titles. Lindenwood gymnasts also earned 16 MIC All-Conference honors.
Scherwinski also coached at his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. There, his athletes earned numerous top finishes in the WIAC Conference and D3 National Championship.
As an athlete, the Green Bay, Wis., native was a competitive Level 10 gymnast. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Marketing from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in May 2021 and his master’s degree in Sport Coaching from West Virginia University in December 2022.
