Scott M. Fuess Jr. was named the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Faculty Athletics Representative on Feb. 21, 2020.
As faculty athletics representative, Fuess serves as a liaison between the Office of the Chancellor and Athletic Department. His areas of focus in the role include the welfare of student-athletes, NCAA and Big Ten Conference compliance, maintaining the positive relationship between athletics and faculty, developing and responding to NCAA legislative proposals and representing the university at related NCAA and Big Ten Conference meetings.
The half-time position - which was restructured to an expected term of five years - reports directly to Nebraska’s President and consults with Athletic Director Troy Dannen. Fuess splits time between faculty representative duties and academic responsibilities.
Fuess, the Steinhart Distinguished Professor of Business and former chair of the College of Business’ economics department, has worked at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln since 1986. He serves on the Faculty Senate’s Intercollegiate Athletics Committee, having chaired the committee for 2018-19 and a sub-committee in 2017-18. He also has served on numerous Big Ten Conference committees, including the Sports Management Committee, the Compliance and Reinstatement Committee and the Legislative Review Committee. For 2022-23 he served as Chair of the Big Ten Compliance and Reinstatement Committee.
Fuess earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware, as well as master’s and doctoral degrees from Purdue University. His research interests are labor economics, the economics of collegiate sports, and the economy of Japan. He has earned numerous “Distinguished Teaching” awards. In 2016 he received the UNL College of Business “Distinguished Service” award.
