There’s still time to make a difference! Find a local Nebraska blood donation location here and donate before Dec. 7 to have it count for UNL. If you are elsewhere in the country, visit BigTen.Org/Abbott/Donate to find a different time and location to donate blood for Nebraska.

Let’s win the competition and save some lives!

We know you bleed Husker red. Now is your chance to prove it.

For the first time in history, our college conference is hosting a nationwide blood donation competition. Healthcare company Abbott and the Big Ten Conference’s “The We Give Blood Drive” is aimed at alleviating current blood shortages, cultivating the next generation of blood donors and saving thousands of lives along the way.

The winning school with the most blood donations from students, alumni or fans across the country will be announced at the Discover Big Ten Championship Game on Dec. 7 in Indianapolis. If Nebraska comes out up top, the university will be awarded a $1 million prize to advance student or community health from Abbott.

Blood donations matter. Every 2 seconds, someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion. More than 80% of deaths in the operating room are due to blood loss. Twenty-five percent of donated blood goes to cancer patients in need of transfusions. And 1 in 83 moms receive blood after childbirth: Moms like Ellen Wichman, 2012 University of Nebraska-Lincoln graduate, who received nine life-saving units of blood after the birth of her son in 2017.

To participate in the competition, donate blood anywhere and visit BigTen.Org/Abbott/Submit to upload proof of donation and select Nebraska to have your donation count for our school.

Let’s roll up our sleeves, Huskers – for the sake of our communities, and our school. Go Big Red!
