  • The new website - www.thisisnebraska.com - has recently been launched. The soccer portion can be found at www.thisisnebraska.com/soccer.php?sport=soc. The NCAA recently made it impermissible for institutions to provide hard copies of media guides to recruits. This new website will hopefully provie prospective student-athletes with all the information about Nebraska's 23 varsity sports.
  • Another congratulations to Morgan Marlborough, Jordan Jackson and Katie Goetzmann on their recent academic accomplishments. Jackson and Goetzmann were each tabbed to the ESPN Academic All-District VII Second Team, while Marlborough was named to the First Team. Marlborough then went on to earn one of college athletics' most prestigious honors by earning a spot on the 2010 ESPN Academic All-America Team. Marlborough and NU football safety Austin Cassidy have increased Nebraska's nation-leading total to 279 Academic All-Americans across all sports.
  • Less than three weeks remain until the 2011 Winter Academy at the Hawks Championship Center. This year's 10-session event will run from Jan. 3-Feb. 9. To register and find out more information, visit here.
  • Notre Dame was crowned the 2010 national champion. The Fighting Irish defeated Stanford in the championship, 1-0, after advancing to the finals with a 1-0 win over Big Ten foe Ohio State. Nebraska's future conference qualified six teams for the 2010 NCAA Tournament (Ohio State, Wisconsin, Penn State, Minnesota, Michigan and Illinois). In addition to Ohio State, Wisconsin and Penn State also won first round games, while Minnesota advanced all the way to the Sweet 16 after defeating Creighton and Texas A&M. Here is the final NSCAA/HendrickCars.com Top 25 poll.
  • The Big Ten recently unveiled the new logos that will be used with the addition of Nebraska joining the conference in July 2011.

It was a busy first home weekend last week, as we hosted four matches at the Nebraska Soccer Field as part of the adidas Husker Classic. The Huskers picked up their first two wins of the season in 2-0 shutouts over Loyola Chicago and Loyola Maryland and now hit the road to take on Indiana this Saturday. The Huskers return home Monday to face IUPUI. If you attend the Nebraska football team's season opener this Saturday, you can receive free admission with your ticket stub. A few other notes surround the program:

  • Take a look at all the upcoming promotions on the 2010 Soccer Promotions Calendar.
  • Thanks to everyone who came out for the Meet-N-Beat event last week. It was again a huge success for the program as hundreds of Lincoln and Omaha area youth attended the event. The players stayed an extra half-hour to sign all the autographs. The recap includes highlights from the night by clicking the play button on the picture.
  • Check out the next issue of Big Red Report magazine coming in the next week. It will include a feature on junior Molly Thomas.
  • This Saturday's match at Indiana will be web streamed on the Big Ten Network's web site. With Nebraska's conference move in 2011, the addition of the Big Net Network is going to be a huge plus for the NU soccer program. This year, at least 10 regular-season women's soccer matches will be broadcast. In addition to games, several player and coach interviews will be done in on-campus studios, which are controlled by the Big Ten Network headquarters in Chicago.
  • The Big Ten Network is available in over 75 million homes nationwide, with approximately 40 million subscribers, as a result of its agreements with DirecTV (Channel 610) and Dish Network (Channel 439), and more than 230 cable operators, including Comcast, Time Warner, Mediacom and Charter Communications. To find out if the Big Ten Network is currently available in your home, go to http://www.bigtennetwork.com/dpp/about_us/ChannelFinder. In addition to its television coverage, the Big Ten Network also streams hundreds of events online, such as this week's match at Indiana.
  • The soccer team has been utilizing the new practice field on the east side of the Hawks Championship Center. The turf was installed before the start of fall football camp and is an exact replica of Tom Osborne Field inside Memorial Stadium.
  • Media guides, posters and schedule cards are now available. Posters and schedule cards are free at the Nebraska Marketing table each home game, while media guides will be for sale for $5 at the concession stand inside the Hawks Championship Center.

The spring season has concluded and now it's time to look forward to the fall! The 2010 schedule will most likely be finalized in May or June. Nebraska ended the spring slate last Saturday with a 3-1 victory at Creighton following a 4-2 morning defeat to Minnesota in Lincoln. Thanks to everyone who came out to the Nebraska Soccer Field for the match! Here are a few other news and notes surround the program:

  • Molly Thomas is currently in Corvallis, Ore., training with the U.S. Under-23 Women's National Team. Her squad takes on Oregon State tonight and Portland on Sunday in a pair of exhibition matches. Morgan Marlborough just returned from Los Angles late last week, where she trained with the Under-20 Women's National Team. They are looking to trim the roster from 26 players to 21 for the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Germany this July.
  • Congratulations to Shay Powell, Brittney Lanier and Jessica Mills for all being honored at Monday morning's HERO breakfast. Lanier received a HERO award for her outstanding community involvement, while Powell and Mills were recognized for mentoring elementary students as part of NU's Connect Program
  • The new jersey numbers for the 2010 Huskers are posted on the roster page.
  • All the biographies have been updated through the 2009 season.
  • For our Kansas City area followers, a story from the KC Star on the city hoping to obtain the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

We're already past the halfway point of the spring season and the Huskers have compiled a 2-2-2 record against a very tough schedule. Forward Molly Thomas leads NU with two goals, although the Huskers have fielded a balanced attack with six Huskers scoring in six matches. One of the most positive signs of the spring has been immediate contributions from Nebraska's trio of redshirt freshmen - Bri Badje, Stacy Bartels and Emma Stevens. In the Huskers' first win of the spring over defending Mountain West Conference champion BYU, Stevens posted a shutout and recorded four saves in the 1-0 victory. Badje and Bartels have added talent on the offensive side with each tallying one assist this spring (Badje vs. Florida State; Bartels vs. Virginia). Forwards Alexa Cardona and Morgan Marlborough lead the team in the assists category with two each.

Here are a few other notes as we wind down the 2010 spring season...

  • On Nebraska's trip to the East Coast last week, the Huskers made a stop in Washington D.C., visiting famous landmarks such as the White House and Washington Monument. Below is a picture of the team in front of the White House.
  • We are coming up on Nebraska's home spring match vs. Minnesota on Saturday, April 17 at 9:30 a.m. If you are in town, this will kick off a full schedule of Husker events for the day, including the football team's annual Red-White Spring Game at 1 p.m. (approximately 15,000 tickets remain), where former Husker standout Ndamukong Suh will have his jersey retired. In addition to soccer and football, softball (vs. Baylor at 3 p.m.), baseball (vs. Kansas at 4 p.m.) and volleyball (vs. Illinois at 7 p.m.) are also in action on the NU campus.
  • Construction continues to pick up in West Stadium on Nebraska's new Student Life Complex. The $10.5 million project will open this fall and give Husker student-athletes an academic experience not found anywhere else in the nation. Visit the Nebraska Student Life Complex page on Huskers.com.
  • A few weeks late, but here is a Q&A with Jill Ellis (Morgan Marlborough's coach on the U.S. U-20 National Team) looking back on their CONCACAF Championship in Guatemala. There are a couple mentions of Morgan in the story.
  • Spread the word about Nebraska's 2010 soccer camps, which run through June and July this summer. Several camp options are currently available, while information on assistant coach Wally Crittenden's goalkeeping camp is coming soon.

  • Former Huskers Carly Peetz and Anna Caniglia are currently in Boston Breakers' training camp out in Massachusetts. The pair arrived in Boston on Feb. 27 and although official camp began on Monday, March 8, Peetz and Caniglia trained all last week with other team members. Carly was drafted by the Breakers in the sixth round of the 2010 WPS Draft (new bio here), while Anna received an invitation to camp shortly after. The Breakers' preseason schedule and training camp release is here.
  • Also, Boston Breakers assistant coach Lisa Cole is posting daily recaps of training camp on soccerinteractive.com. Check it out here to stay up to date on Carly and Anna's progress. The Boston Breakers are also on Twitter at Twitter.com/BostonBreakers.
  • It's been an exciting year so far for Morgan Marlborough, who has traveled to Guatemala and Spain over the past two months with the U.S. Under-20 Women's National Team. Morgan is back in Lincoln now competing with Nebraska in its 2010 spring season. Todd Henrichs from the Lincoln Journal Star is coming to practice Wednesday morning to interview Morgan, and will have a story out in the near future. I'll post it on our Twitter page (www.twitter.com/NebraskaSoccer) when it's published, along with any other stories in newspapers, magazines, etc. If I miss any, let me know (bgries@huskers.com).
  • About two weeks ago, we received a plaque for Shay Powell, recognizing her Academic All-America award from CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine. Powell, along with NU volleyball player Kori Cooper, increased Nebraska's nation-leading Academic All-American number to 271. Powell will soon have her picture permanently displayed with Nebraska's other honorees in the academic center in West Stadium.
  • The NCAA is exploring options to combine the men's and women's postseason tournaments by 2011. A story by the Associated Press said "Division I men's soccer committee chair John Diffley confirmed the proposal. Currently, the Division I men's and women's College Cup semifinals and finals are held at separate sites on different weekends. Combining the two events could create more fan interest, although wear and tear on fields could be a concern."
  • The Huskers have already completed four matches in the 2010 spring season after trips to Georgia and Arizona. Stay tuned to the schedule page for updated dates and times (all times are Central). Nebraska is off until March 28 when the Big Red travels to Virginia.

A week ago, nine current high school seniors turned in a national letter-of-intent to the Nebraska soccer program. The 2010 class includes prospects from five states, including four in-state signees. Aside from the full press release, here are a few other comments from the new Huskers about their decisions to attend Nebraska. Photos have also been attached on each of their bios on the roster page.

What are you most looking forward to at Nebraska?
Hannah Dittmar: "There are so many things. I will get to wear the Husker jersey and represent Nebraska. Besides that, I am also excited to meet new people, go to such a large school and of course to receive an education that will help me pursue a career."

Maddie Hanssler: "I am looking forward to playing soccer with not only a great coach, but great players as well. The team has great chemistry on and off the field that I am excited to be a part of that. Aside from soccer, Nebraska offered what I want to pursue academically. The campus has a very good atmosphere, and it made me feel comfortable. I visited a few other universities, but once I came to Nebraska it was easy to see it is the perfect fit for me."

Maritza Hayes: "I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone. I'm also really looking forward to playing soccer at a high level with people who I know can teach me a lot."

Ashley Hick: "I am looking forward to be playing with high quality soccer players that will challenge me and make me a better player. I am excited to work out in the weight room and be in the best shape as possible! Besides soccer, I am looking forward to meeting new people in my classes, around campus, and in the dorms."

Kylie Kusleika: "I'm looking forward to the hard work and intensity of Division I soccer, as well as the relationship with the girls on and off the field. I think being a part of such a close knit and determined group of women will be a great start to future goals."

Megan Merrill: "I'm looking forward wearing the Nebraska jersey and representing the school. I'm excited to travel and play with the team and become and all-around better soccer player. I know that playing with the university is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I plan on taking full advantage of that opportunity I am given."

Mallorie Monhollon: "I'm looking forward to starting my career at the next level and challenging myself and my abilities with the high level of soccer played at Nebraska. I can't wait to meet all my teammates and start creating friendships and memories."

Ari Romero: "Where do I begin? First of all, the snow! I was born and raised in the desert southwest. I'm also looking forward to the first day of practice, first day of school and the beginning of new friendships."

Amy Swearer: "I'm looking forward to growing as a player and to hopefully add some Big 12 and national championships to the Husker trophy case."

What are your impressions of the Husker coaching staff?
Hannah Dittmar: "The coaching staff at Nebraska is great! They are friendly and helpful and have already helped me become a better player through all of the summer and winter academies I have attended. They are experts and I can't wait to learn more from them."

Maddie Hanssler: "When I first met the coaches, I could see how dedicated they were. You can tell that they love what they are doing and are extremely committed to the program. It makes it easier to play for someone who loves what they are doing just as much as you do. At Nebraska, that is how the whole coaching staff is."

Maritza Hayes: "The Nebraska coaching staff is full of people who I highly respect. I honestly know that I can learn so much from them, not only with soccer but with things that will help me grow as a person as well."

Ashley Hick: "The Nebraska coaching staff is filled with first-class coaches who really understand the game. The coaches are respectable people who only want the best for their players. They challenge their players to their fullest potential and nothing less. They are easy-going and are very welcoming to be around. I am impressed with how they keep track of the players' school work, not because they have to, but because they choose to. I am looking forward to being challenged by all the outstanding coaches."

Kylie Kusleika: "They know what they want to see from you and expect a lot out of you, as well as being personable and easy to talk to. You know they love what they do and I think it's really important that the players see that."

Megan Merrill: "My impression of the coaching staff is that they seem to care for everyone as a player and as a person. They are skilled, they know their sport, and I know while playing for them, I will definitely become a better soccer player and an all around better person."

Mallorie Monhollon: "They are awesome. I love how they create a family atmosphere.  Wally is a great motivator for me, and I can't wait to learn all that he can teach me."

Ari Romero: "I immediately felt comfortable with the entire staff. After visiting the campus and experiencing game day, I wanted to be a Husker!"

Amy Swearer:"John and Wally are two of the coolest guys I have ever met. Wally has such a competitive and high intensity nature, and yet he is really easy to talk to and you always feel comfortable around him. John is so knowledgeable about the game and passionate about developing players."

Welcome to 2010. December was a little slow, but activities are picking up with the New Year. Here are a few news and notes surrounding the Nebraska Soccer program.

  • The staff is busy at work, beginning the 2010 Big Red Winter Academy this week inside the Hawks Championship Center. A total of 11 current Huskers attended the camp before attending the University of Nebraska and for the fourth straight year - Big Red Winter Academy is sold out.

  • Just after Christmas, Morgan Marlborough was named a freshman All-American by Soccer America, the first Husker to do so since 1996. She was also invited to the US Under-20 National Team Training Camp in Gainesville, Fla., where she is spending this week playing with some of the top young talent in the country. Next week, we'll get an update on how everything went for Marlborough.

It's Gameday as the Huskers welcome Iowa State to Lincoln for a 3:30 p.m. matchup today at the Nebraska Soccer Field. The 2009 season is winding down, but not before a group of six seniors strive to lead Nebraska to an NCAA Tournament berth. The Huskers are 10-4-4 (4-3-2) and have a chance for a top-four seed in next week's Big 12 Championship, but it all starts today with an important matchup against the Cyclones.

Senior Day ceremonies will begin at 3:20 p.m., as Julie Berkshire, Anna Caniglia, Lauren Isenhower, Brittney Lanier, Carly Peetz and Shay Powell will all be playing their final home games as Huskers.

"Each has had unique challenges, whether it be injuries, position changes, or fighting for playing time, but they have always trained hard and put their teammates ahead of themselves," head coach John Walker said. "They have been instrumental in reviving the program over the past couple of seasons and setting the competitive standards for the young players to follow."

Nebraska leads the all-time series against Iowa State, 11-2-1. The Huskers won the first 10 meetings against the Cyclones from 1995 to 2004, before dropping back-to-back matches in 2005 and 2006. The squads tied in 2007, while Nebraska downed Iowa State last season in Ames, 3-1.

Last year's Nebraska-Missouri matchup was a memorable one, as the Huskers edged the Tigers in double-overtime, 3-2, on Sari Raber's game-winning goal in the 106th minute. Current Huskers Carly Peetz and Anna Caniglia also scored for NU.

Here's a look at Oklahoma, as the Huskers are set to square off against the Sooners on Sunday at 1 p.m:

Oklahoma (7-6-1, 2-3-0) won its first four games of the season, but has lost six of its last nine, including back-to-back losses at Colorado (Oct. 2) and Texas Tech (Oct. 4) before defeating Iowa State, 1-0, on Friday night in Ames. The Sooners' other conference victory was an upset of No. 13 Texas A&M (3-2) in Norman on Sept. 27. With a 2-3-0 Big 12 record, Oklahoma is currently sixth in the league standings, one spot ahead of Nebraska (1-1-2).

Junior forward Whitney Palmer is responsible for more than half of her team's scoring this season, as she has 12 of Oklahoma's 23 goals in 2009. A 2008 second-team All-Big 12 selection, Palmer's individual total is second in the Big 12 Conference (behind NU's Morgan Marlborough) as she has began the league season with five goals in the first five games. The only other Sooner with more than two goals is freshman midfielder Dria Hampton (3), who scored the game-winner in the 64th minute on Friday night against the Cyclones.

Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire has started all 13 games in the net and leads the league in saves (68, 4.86 per game). However, she is ninth in save percentage (.747) and has given up 1.64 goals per game. Freshman defender Brianna Turang was a prep and club teammate of Nebraska freshman goalkeeper Emma Stevens in Corona, Calif. (Santiago High School/Slammers FC).

Head coach Nicole Nelson is in her second season with the Sooners after a 3-15-1 campaign in 2008 that included conference wins over Baylor and Iowa State. Nelson was previously an assistant coach at Baylor (2005) and Texas (2006-07) after a three-year head coaching stint Stephen F. Austin (2002-04).

The Phoenix is probably the most unusual nickname the Huskers have seen or will see on the 2009 schedule. The nickname is actually a mythical bird and is the same mascot used by Elon College in North Carolina. The Phoenix has been Green Bay's official nickname since a 1970 student vote, when they selected it ahead of "Fighting Tomatoes" in the balloting.

The calendar has turned to October, and that means a month of six home games for the Nebraska soccer team. The Huskers have the first contest today at 4 p.m., against Green Bay of the Horizon League.

Nebraska is 5-2-3 this season and has an opportunity for a big month if the Huskers can protect their home field. Head coach John Walker's squad was 8-2-1 at the Nebraska Soccer Field last season, with its only losses coming to UC Riverside (0-1) and No. 15 Colorado (1-2).

The Huskers are 5-1-2 in non-conference play, as the Phoenix come to town as NU's final non-Big 12 opponent of the 2009 season. After today, the Huskers begin a stretch of eight straight conference contests, starting this Sunday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m., against defending Big 12 champion Oklahoma State at the Nebraska Soccer Field.

Green Bay is 2-7-2 this year, with victories over North Dakota State and Northern Iowa. The Husker-Phoenix match-up is the first in school history.
