Nebraska has made major steps forward in 2024-25. The Big Red ended the regular season schedule with four consecutive top-five tournament finishes, including a runner-up performance at the Robert Kepler Invitational at Ohio State (April 18-19). It followed back-to-back third-place showings at Minnesota's Bell Bank "Pay It Forward" Collegiate in Arizona (March 24-25) and Missouri's Tiger Intercollegiate (April 7-8). Overall, the Huskers produced six top-five tournament finishes on the season on their way to a 97-51-3 overall record - Nebraska's best record since 2009-10 (131-39-4). The 2024-25 Huskers also smashed the school record with a 288.38 stroke average - more than two strokes per round better than the previous mark set in 2023-24 (290.66), and five strokes better than Minzel's first season as an NU assistant in 2021-22 (293.38).
Hamish Murray set the Nebraska senior season stroke average record (71.91) in 2024-25, while producing the best individual finish by a Husker at the Big Ten Championship since the Big Red joined the conference (2011-12) with his tie for 15th. Murray's finish was NU's best conference showing since 2007, when Brady Schnell tied for third at the Big 12 Championship, and the performance by the Australian came in the Big Ten's first season with an 18-team tournament field.
Rudy Sautron, a 2024-25 sophomore from Reunion Island, France, did Murray one better by setting Nebraska's single-season stroke average record (71.70) over 30 competitive rounds. Sautron opened his Husker career with a victory at the season-opening Gopher Invitational with a school sophomore record 208 (-5) over three rounds in Minnesota. He matched that total with a 208 (-8) at the Steelwood Collegiate to close the fall (Oct. 26-27), which included a school-record 63 (-9) in the final round.
Brodie Cunningham added a Nebraska freshman stroke average record (72.61). The first-year collegian from Glasgow, Scotland, caught fire in the spring and reeled off four consecutive top-15 finishes to help fuel the Huskers. His performances included a tie for third (209, -7) with Murray at the Bell Bank "Pay It Forward" Collegiate and a tie for eighth (213, +3) at the Tiger Intercollegiate.
Sautron, Cunningham and junior-to-be Evan McDermott are expected to form the nucleus of Nebraska's 2025-26 lineup. McDermott joined Murray in playing all 32 rounds in the Husker lineup in 2024-25, posting a career-best 73.44 stroke average. McDermott, who improved his average by 2.01 strokes per round over his freshman campaign in 2022-23, produced four top-25 individual finishes as a redshirt sophomore, including a career-best tie for 11th at Nebraska's Git-R-Done Invitational at Firethorn Golf Club (Sept. 23-24). He also moved into Nebraska's career top 10 in stroke average.
Minzel, a team captain as a golfer on the 2004 Nebraska Wesleyan team that qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships, brought strong credentials and a passion for helping young players improve their games to the Husker staff.
A Lincoln High School graduate, Minzel earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Nebraska Wesleyan in 2004. He worked professionally in private business since graduation, but remained extremely active in the Nebraska golf community.
From 2017 to 2019, Minzel was a tournament committee member for the Nebraska Golf Association. A three-time Nebraska Mid-Amateur champion with wins in 2010, 2011 and most recently in 2018, Minzel is also a two-time Nebraska Four-Ball champion (2011, 2015). In 2010, he was a member of USGA Nebraska State Team.
Following his senior season at Nebraska Wesleyan, Minzel was the 2004 Nebraska Match Play champion. He was also a Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar as a senior for the Prairie Wolves.
A three-time Class A state qualifier at Lincoln High (1997, 1998, 1999), Minzel spent his first two collegiate seasons helping Northeast Community College in Norfolk to NJCAA national tournament appearances in 2001 and 2002. He was a member of the South Dakota men’s golf program in the fall of 2002 before transferring to Nebraska Wesleyan.
