Sophomore (1997-98)
Hanne Nyquist was Nebraska's top performer as a sophomore in 1997-98. The second-year player from Oslo, Norway led NU with a 77.21 stroke average over 28 rounds, joining Rachelle Tacha and Shirin Hornecker in the Husker lineup in every event during the season.
A first-team All-Big 12 Conference honoree in 1998, Nyquist finished fifth at the Big 12 Championships, helping the Huskers to a sixth-place team finish with rounds of 80-75-73 to close at 228. It was her fourth top-10 finish of the season, joining a pair of fourth-place ties at the Jeannine McHaney Memorial (71-82-81-224) and the Colorado Invitational (75-73-73-221) and a fifth-place showing at the season-opening Chip-N Club Invitational (77-72-77-226). Her three-round score of 221 at Colorado was a career-best.
Following her sophomore season, Nyquist moved back to Norway for personal reasons and did not return to the team.
Freshman (1996-97)
Nyquist burst onto the collegiate scene with one of the best seasons by a Husker freshman in school history. She notched four top-10 individual tournament finishes, including a fourth-place finish to earn All-Big 12 honors at the first-ever Big 12 Championships in 1997. Nyquist led the Huskers in season stroke average at 78.63, just ahead of teammate and 1996 Big Eight Golfer of the Year Rachelle Tacha (78.91).
Nyquist was named the 1997 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, joining Tacha as the only Huskers to ever win the conference newcomer award. She was also named to the Big 12 All-Tournament Team for her team-leading effort at the Big 12 Championships, which included three straight rounds of 77 to finish at 231.
Nyquist went on to post Nebraska's top score at the 1997 NCAA West Regional, producing rounds of 74-76-76 to finish at 226, which matched Husker great Heidi (Wall) Stark for NU's best-ever score at a regional up to that point in history. The score was NU's best regional mark until All-American Sarah Sasse eclipsed the mark with a 220 at the 2000 NCAA West Regional, while teammate Amy Roux also surpassed the mark at the same regional with a 224.
Nyquist opened her Husker career by tying for 12th at the weather-shortened Lady Lion Invitational, before tying for sixth (235) at Nebraska's own Chip-N Club Invitational. After a tie for 26th (235) at the Lady Tar Heel Invite, Nyquist took third at the Big 12 Fall Preview. Nyquist's three-round score of 224 included a career-best 70 in the second round.
She tied for 12th at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational, before struggling to a 43rd-place finish to close the fall at the Diet Coke/Roadrunner Invite. After opening the spring season with a tie for 40th (247) to lead the Huskers at the Pioneer Electronics Bruin Classic, she rebounded with a tie for 13th (235) at the Betsy Rawls Invitational.
After a tie for 45th at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational, Nyquist claimed the only individual title of her career at the Utah-Dixie Classic, April 7-8. Her three-round total of 224 included a second-round 71. For the season, Nyquist was NU's top finisher at six of 12 events, including each of the last three competitions and five of Nebraska's six spring tournaments.
High School/Amateur
Nyquist was a four-time winner of the Norwegian Junior Championship, including two victories in the under-18 division and a pair of wins in the under-21 division. She was also the runner-up at the 1996 Norwegian Open.
